Forums - Sales Discussion - 1 week and DS will hit 50 million

@whiteoutking
yeah i noticed that. It's definately already done it in sales terms, ps2 is still shipping 10milion a year... last quarterly report would have shown it but people got caught up in all the BS around Sonys new way of reporting shipments and ps3 numbers.
the site only seems to show half...erly?/ semily?... erm, half-year figures though, so by the end of september it should show.

The DS will probably be at about 65 million by the end of the year. This holiday season it's really the system that will dominate because the Wii will still be suffering from shortages and the 360 still will be out of the price range to be a true mass market system. The PSP with it's redisign could make a push, but I don't think a sales increase for that system would effect the DS much. And then next year when in all liklihood the DS drops to the sweet $100 price tag in the US, and DQIX comes out in Japan, it really could be pumped up to a whole new level. 30 million sales in 2008 isn't out of the question.

In my opinion the only way the DS doesn't become the best selling system of all time is if NIntendo releases it's successor late 2008 or early 2009. Since we haven't heard of it yet that's very unlikely. I'm saying the DS2 (and yes they will stay with the DS brand) comes late 2009 at the earliest.

Yep defo over 60 million by the end of this year.

As for lifetime it'll easily go over 100 million shipments. By region though is where we need to do the major breakdown. It's expanded Japan so much that there is no telling where it could end up at. Hell that thing could ship close to 50 million units in Japan alone before it starts hitting the point of diminishing returns.

As for Europe/Other it'll definetly go pretty high there as its become a pretty strong market for the DS. I'm seeing somewhere around 40-45 million shipped there.

America is really where ya see sales being slow but of course GBA still probably takes 50-70k sales away every month. About 15k a week. Not to mention it also has a competitor there this time around that's making not too bad of a move. DS is pretty untouched in Japan, Europe, and other but in America PSP has'nt done so bad.

But I do think by the end of DS's lifecycle that it can get upwards of what GBA had that's about 40-45 million shipped.

So were looking at about 130-140 million units shipped of this thing haha. That's quite a bit. The thing is quite a monster and the only thing that could keep it from getting those numbers is Nintendo releasing a new handheld early on it.

The DS has a chance to become the best selling game system ever if it can shake off the perception that it's just a game system. Right now in Japan about a quarter of the software coming out is purely educational. Some schools have their own programs/carts made and the students do schoolwork on their DS. The "My French/Spanish Coach" titles are coming out soon and if they sell in the Americas then maybe there will be more. That kind of edutainment software will break down the perception that the DS is just a game system and the public may start seeing value when they see a kid playing with their DS instead of something they need to write about to their congressman and have banned. Localizing the Yoga Trainer is also another hopeful start. And I can't wait to see the Naked Chef's cookbook on the DS, woohoo!

 The French/Spanish learner should go and buy that title... If it sells well they may make one for Japanese too =(

last year according to this site it sold close to 8 million in November and December, it should match that easily, add a month and a half of normal sales [half of Sept + Oct]... which should add to 3mil at least. That makes 61 million already, and thats a conservative estimate. i'm going to guess 62.5 for end of 07.

if it has managed 60 million in 3 years then in 6 it should come level with ps2... although that doesn't strictly work usually [seeing as the DS isn't much past what the GBA was at 3 years] i still think it has a chance because it's selling much faster than the GBA was at 3yo. [gba sold fast at start then slowed, ds is opposite so far]

although come to think of it, when did the GBA launch? wasn't it 2000 [not long after ps2], which means it only had a 4 year life till DS came out, no wonder it 'only' managed 80mil compared to original GB.
