Forums - Gaming Discussion - Which was better: Nintendo 64 or Playstation?

This basically boils down to how much people like RPGs. If you really like RPGs you're going to vote for PS1. If you don't particularly care for them you'll vote N64.

I'm not a big JRPG fan but I still think that the PS1 smashes the N64 thanks to games like Metal Gear Solid and Symphony of the Night. BTW, I must reiterate that the Saturn owns them both.

And the N64 smashes the PS1 with OoT and Mario 64. Then it also has Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Mystical Ninja, Majora's Mask, Pokémon Snap, Pokémon Stadium1&2, etc.

Funny thing is, I own Super Mario 64, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Banjo Kazooie and I wasn't impressed by any of them. Only OoT and Paper Mario are worth mentioning but I still think that OoT is among the most overrated games of all time. It blows my mind when people speak well of the N64. I hated it so much that I went to PC gaming for eigth years before giving console gaming another chance. That being said I shouldn't have listed MGS, it hasn't aged very well either. Saturn FTW!

Wohohoho buddy. Calm down a bit.

The N64 made you go to PC gaming? Jeez, what did it do? Beat you up and take your lunch money?

@tehsage

It's extremely lousy and overrated games helped convince me that consoles were entirely incapable of proper 3D gaming. At the time I was still unimpressed with the PS1 and Saturn and afterwards I found early PS2 games like DMC and GTA3 to be unplayable so I guess that the N64 wasn't entirely to blame. That being said I think the 64's games were at best nothing special. I completed Goldeneye and SM64 fairly recently but I just can't force myself through others like Perfect Dark. OoT is good but terribly overrated (I don't want to force myself through the Water Temple >_

Neither was better. N64 had an armful of AAA games and some good games, but little else. PS1 had a diverse library. PS1 was also prone to breaking and had worse graphics. N64 also pioneered a revolutionary controller. I like N64 better but both consoles were good enough that if a 10 year old was given either he would have been satisfied.

N64 is way better, although both were very much disappointments. At least N64 had more than one real all-time great game, unlike PS1 (Castlevania: SOTN is the only one). But N64 was Nintendo's worst system other than the Virtual Boy, and PS2 has much, much better games than PS1. Plus the graphics for both systems are fugly for the most part.

I love RPGs, and that only made me ALMOST pick PS1.  With RPGs included it's extremely close, but I still went N64 due to the amazing, truly legendary games the N64 gave us.

I really cant imagine why you think your a gamer? If you didnt like any games on N64, PS1 or Saturn were you from the future when these consoles came out? The N64 especially blew me away in graphics and game freedom. And I was a PC gamer at the time.

@selnor

Every gamer has to enjoy blocky polygons and terrible camera controls? Sorry but compared to the SNES/Genesis the PS1/N64/Saturn were craptastic. Only the Saturn's library holds up and its best games were released in '98 at the end of its lifetime. By that time I had turned a blind eye to the consoles.
