Forums - Sony Discussion - How Sony defeated Sony

By modeling the PS3 to more closely resemble the Xbox than the PS2 and the constant focus on competing directly with the 360 that bordered on obsession Sony clearly defeated themselves. Why focus on the online experience and multimedia capabilities when you underdeveloped both? How did launching a year late with the most expensive and developer unfriendly system make sense? Sony was sabotaged internally... or monkeys run the company.

All I can say to this is Kutaragi lost his way and Kaz Hirai is the biggest dick on earth.

I love these threads, it makes me think about all the historical revisionism in the past. If only, if only, if only.

Sony lost this generation without firing a shot people. The Wii was always going to win, it was always a question about 2nd place.

Now, what incentive is there for people with a PS2 to upgrade to a PS3 if the PS3 isn't significantly more powerful? Its not like they delivered any other major changes apart from network play and performance. Furthermore the closer they position themselves to the Wii the weaker their position becomes and the stronger the Wiis position becomes.

+1. I hate how fanboys talk about how Sony would've been in the lead this gen if the price was right. It was always a battle for second place. Theres no way around that.

It really wasn't always anything.

And yes.  Price is the primary flaw in Sony's logic and the primary reason why the PS3 doesn't sell much much much better.  Sony found out the hard way that there is a ceiling and price point where people just CAN'T afford to pay.  I didn't get a PS3 till several months after the release (And I'm someone who gets consoles when they first come out) because of the price tag on it.

I don't know if Sony would have had the lead this gen if the price was right, simply because I don't forsee them ever being able to keep the price as low as Nintendo.

The Wii would've still had similar sales regardless of whether Sony had launched the PS3 at a $300 price point. The Wii reaches out to a broader audience, while the PS3 only caters to the hardcore. If Sony would've done the right thing the PS3 would be neck and neck with 360 for second place.

I don't agree with any of this.  I almost replied to the "Microsoft DEFEETED Sony thread" but somehow I held it off.  Sony is not defeated.  Nothing is wrong.  The Playstation brand is not falling.

How often do people need to be reminded.

          year 1             year 2             year 3             year 4

PS3: 5,856,110     16,871,475      20,809,951 (current year)

360: 5,895,015     13,631,951      23,279,252    28,913,386 (current year)

The above info is from this website.  The above numbers might be off a bit depending on which week you choose, but as you can see, for each systems first year they were pretty much side by side for sales.  Things look very different for the next year.  The PS3 in it's second year outsold the 360 by a little over 3 million for it's second year.  And moving onto the PS3's third year, which is the year we are in and it is far from over.  The PS3 only needs a little less than 3 million to outsell the 360.

There is even this to back up my info.  I'm sure "some" of you have seen it.

This is the only thing I really need to say to sony.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjtbhmQhsXg

The thing I see of that

5,856,110 vs 13,631,951

16,871,475 vs 23,279,252

20,809,951 vs 28,913,386

If the Ps3 has never outsold the 360 in a year and Microsoft has said that the 360 will last as long as the Ps3 how can the Ps3 win?

You are still comparing one systems year 1 total to another systems year 2 total, and year 2 to 3 and 3 to 4.  If you actually took the time to read my post you would see that the PS3 year over year IS outselling the 360 but the majority of people forget about that extra year or throw it to the side.  They don't want to think about it and how without it, things would be different.

Sony is and always will be fine.

The thing with comparing year 1 to year 1 is most multiplatform games for the PS3 come out a year earlier in it's lifetime then X360.

For instanst GTA4

x360 year 3

PS3 year 2.

Now which one would sell more in year 2 as a result of GTA4.

How disadvantaged was the 360 by people waiting for the PS3

and

Microsoft has said that the 360 will last as long as the PS3 i.e The PS3 will always be a year behind.

I never really took that into consideration.  However, let's take a look at year two.  Do you think all of the games that came out that year could push the PS3 ahead by 3 million units?  I agree with everyone that says the price was too high and that it is still too high.  But you can't deny that even with the price of the PS3, it is still selling very very well.

I think we can all agree that Sony's second year for the PS3 was a very good year and the full value of my sales info won't come into effect until we hit the end of Sony's third year.

lol they catered to no one. Thats how they defeated themselves. If there were more than 2 3rd party exclusives on the console that were worth a damn then maybe just maybe it would be doing better. No one bought the PS2 for Sony first party games, except maybe the GT crowd. History has taught us that first party games only won't save a console (just ask Nintendo a few years ago).

Did that hurt to read?

How was the second year good?? They lost to the 360 worldwide and posted heavy loses. For gamers yes not so much for SONY.
