I still think this is one of the most beautiful looking games ever:

Now if only the game itself wasn't ass.

If only the game played half as good as it looked. We can say that about  quite a few games. i will  not name any names I will get flamed on here.

Edit: Classic 2D Street Fighter games have much better art design than the 3D Street Fighter games.

So my question remains: why?

Because on more modern consoles (Hint: PS3, 360) it's not an issue.

Edit: How do you feel about games like Little Big Planet? It's essentially 2D with a bit of a 3D touch.

Are you saying that 3D graphics have always been an issue and they're really hard to get right and that the PS3 and 360 are the first consoles to do so?  Was every single game butt-ugly last generation, up to and including God of War 2 and Twilight Princess?

This debate is so stupid, MM9 proves more than anything else that people still have a great affinity for 2d graphics irrespective of graphical quality. As a gameplay mechanics choice 3d can really over emphasise the most boring parts of a game.

Rubang is right, Bad 3d games are disgusting and they completely fukd some franchises forever.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Id like to know just what people think of 2d games on PS360 systems? The mega drive collection sold well, SF2 of course, Braid, LBP, etc.

There is a market and its almost as though the Wii has given this opportunity back to dev. who can use 2d conveniently to hide the graphical limitations, while also appealing to traditional gamers. All the more insulting when SF2 doesn't go on VC.

I could care less if a game is 2D or 3D as long as they play well and it sure doesn't hurt if they look good too.

The move to 3D graphics and gameplay worked very well for games like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Metal Gear. Some games though didn't need to be made from polygons to be good games. Phantom hourglass on DS is a game that plays very well but would have looked much better had it been hand drawn.

2D Metroid games have always been 2D hand drawn works along with the Castlevania games. These games are memorable in part because of the amazing artwork in them. To take a side-scrolling Metroid and turn it into a polygon based 2D sidescroller would make no sense. Looking at the fully 3D metroid games in the prime series though, the environments are gorgeous as well.

Awesome, thanks for that. This one goes onto my watch list :)

When the first PS1 came out everything went to 3D.  The nice graphics of 2D were no more.  But over the last few years more 2D that look like 3D games are being released.

Little big planet, Street fighter 4 are but a few.  I just want a side scrolling beat'em thats in 2D with 3D look to it (you know the kind like streets of rage, target renegde, final fight etc)
