Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Who agrees with me in thinking Wii will have the longest lifespan this gen?

Yeah Disolitude, I've been thinking this for quite some time. To be honest with you, I question the intelligence and/or sanity of anyone that thinks differently.

depends on how you define "lifespan" but M$ and sony would definitely cannibalize themselves of retail shelves first for sure lol

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

also to add, in general the Wii fanbase is not graphics whore (if they were that would have an HD console) so therefor I see the users having less (still many will want newer) interest in biggest, faster, newer consoles.

I think that kinda falls under point #3. Its not just graphics too. HD consoles have a quite a few other advantages over the Wii right now... and none of them seem to matter to the general Wii consumer.

Currently:

Motion controls + Nintendo titles > better graphics + higher number of quality titles + superior online + media center capabilities + DVD/Bluray playback + Killzone 2 (lol - sorry i had to)

Sales determine which console lives the longest and Wii has the sales

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

I don't think so because eventually, lack of games without 'Nintendo' or 'Wii' in the title will catch up to them. The reason the PS2 lasted so long was because of strong third party, I believe. And I don't think the Wii has that, nor do I think they will ever really achieve it.

I don't see it lasting longer..maybe around the same amount of time, but not longer. Maybe I'm wrong though.

You are probably correct in your assumption alright.

yeah seriously anyone that doesn't understand that the wii will last the longest doesn't understand the market at all. if one system dominated the others its gonna last a lot longer. this gen that system is the wii.

the wii's current momentum has been built due to nintendo franchises and motion controls. that momentum will continue this year with solid 3rd party support finally hitting this year and wii motion plus games and the continued release of great nintendo games.

third party support will die off for 360 and ps3 as soon as their successors come out. wii will continue to get 3rd party support for a couple years after wii 2 releases because there will be dozens of millions of people who aren't interested in getting the next gen anytime soon and they will still be buying wii games.

wii sales should last at least 2 years longer than ps3 and 360 sales.

end of '08 predictions: wii - 43 million,  360 - 25 million, ps3 - 20 million

@Dissolute

Sony's 10 year plan is not comparible to the Wii, according to Kizrai Sony is current the market leader; this means Wii can do whatever it wants, it can be the market leader of whatever market it's in.

Of course their is the Crazzy Man solution:

Wii units sold in 2008 - 2009 are trending in a way that incumbant Wii owners aren't buying games, this isn't in a specific case and is purely numerical. While Nintendo's own games sell Wii third party games aren't constantly pushing the sales charts like Nintendo's and are quickly in departure from the top 200 here on vgc. Third parties must be seeing this as a reason not to develop for that platform, games lose value faster than 97 Nissan Maxima.

=P

Let's wait and see.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

@dib8rman

Lol...I thought Maximas are prety good when it comes to retaining value :)

It very well could, but no console this gen will live for 10 years, of that I am 100% certain. New x-box in 2012, new ps in 2013 and new Nintendo in 2014 is my guess right now. It seems harder to determine which console will live the longest after their successor comes out, it kinda depends on the status they achieve over the gen. (Both MS and Ninty cut support almost immediately the previous gen/s, but this won't happen now for obvious reasons).
