This year hasn't finished yet, we are still missing Q3 results, and Q4 only just started...... but so far the gaming division is not in profit. If you look at the table I posted above you can see the $1.96 billion loss, followed by $1.2 billion the next year, then it gives only the Q1 results for 2009, adding in Q2 puts them $350 million down so far.

IIRC it's around $3,620,000,000

Basically if MS hadn't have purchased Rare they'd be on equal footing witht eh Xbox 1...except there were 25 million Xbox to 19 million PS3.

the difference here is that sony is recouping costs form both blu ray and their gaming division. and their gaming division has three major consoles. its incredibly difficult to actually tell how much money was lost and gained for each.

The PS2 and PSP profits have offset the losses or R&D costs made on PS3.
PS3 losses could be more than $3 billion, Sony has hidden the exact amount of the losses made on PS3.

Yah a price drop so they can loose more money? What sense does that make.
