Forums - Sony Discussion - Blu-Ray sales surging in Europe

"The gloomy economic conditions and the current recession notwithstanding, gaming appear to be standing stoic - what with the flourishing sales of Blu-ray Disc movies and players all across Europe! In November, Blu-ray hardware sales - which include PS3 consoles - outsold DVD hardware sales, including PS2 consoles, by five times.

Most business analysts feel that 2008 has certainly "been a breakthrough year for Blu-Ray." British Blu-ray player owners bought nearly 462,500 titles in November, a 165% increase over the previous month. The latest numbers for December, released by the British Video Association (BVA) show that 'The Dark Knight' sold an astounding 513,000 units on the first day alone, and 21% of those sales were Blu-Ray. "

that's kinda hard to believe.it sounds too good to be true.

i dont even know how people can watch dvd's after seeing a good blu ray movie.

That is quite impressive. I don't really get the bias against Blu-Ray. If you don't like Sony, OK. Don't like Sony. But don't sit there and make ignorant statements about how it's a horrible format and it'll be gone in a few years and theres so much better stuff out there. If you do, you're ignorant. It's simple as that.

Anywho, congrats to Blu-Rays ascent to greatness.

why is it hard to believe? everyone has a DVD player already. im betting that there were far FAR more DVDs sold than blu ray. i think we still have a few years before blu ray becomes dominant

i dont even know why people spend money on blu ray movies. im probably biased seeing as im not really a technological person but i dont see the attraction. ive watched blu ray and yes when your first see it your thinking 'thats amazing' but after 10 minutes the wow factor is gone and i stop  being impressed

So they're saying "counting PS3s, a lot of BD players sold." They're sure as hell not bragging about Blu Ray disc sales. You know why? Because there is nothing to brag about.

And according to Nelson, most people who buy PS3s don't even know it plays BDs.

Saying Blu Ray sales surging in Europe is very misleading.  It's PS3 sales that are outpacing standard DVD sales.

does any one else see the blu ray disk ad in this very page?(at the bottom of the page)

it says buy 5 blu ray for $5.

well, just buy a big enough TV, and it becomes quite obvious. Most people don't have a TV over 32", so there really is no benefit to Blu-Ray, however, if you have a big TV, then Blu-Ray is a must.

Or, if you are blind, then it doesn't make a difference.

Let's just say, I don't watch anything but HD content except for movies I can't get on Blu-Ray yet, and I couldn't imagine going back.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Also, their numbers are wrong. The Xbox 360, which, like the PS2, is a DVD player, was certainly not factored in to those numbers.

probably because people don't think of it as a DVD player. In fact, I typically forget that it even plays DVDs.
