Nintendo's Wii sold a record 2 million units in November, lapping both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 during a crucial holiday shopping month.

Sales of the Xbox 360 jumped 7.5 percent to 836,000, while sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 dropped 18 percent to 378,000.

It was the Xbox 360's biggest November ever, according to Microsoft. The company benefited in part from robust sales of the Xbox exclusive game Gears of War 2, which was the top selling game for the month, with 1.6 million units sold.

Nevertheless, the Wii is soundly beating both of its console rivals this holiday season. Last year, there was a much tighter race between the Wii and the Xbox 360.

In November 2007, for instance, Nintendo sold 981,000 Wiis to Microsoft's 777,000 Xbox 360s (Sony sold 466,000 PlayStation 3s).

Microsoft, though, has repeatedly said that it considers the PlayStation 3 and not the Wii to be its main competitor/

In an interview, Cammie Dunaway, executive vice president of sales and marketing, Nintendo of America, said "Even in this economy, cash registers are ringing with Nintendo products."

She said sales of the Wii were strong because "families are looking for inexpensive fun activities that they can enjoy together."

Dunaway said that prior to the holiday shopping season Nintendo had committed to putting 50 percent more product on store shelves this year.

Nevertheless, there have been some reports or shortages. For instance, the Wii is out of stock on Amazon.com.

Dunaway said consumers could still find Wiis on the market.

"It will take a bit of work," she said. "You're not going to walk into stores and see stacks."
