Forums - Gaming Discussion - Where the 360 lead came from (the facts)

yes, we all know about the surge of sales brought about by the 360 price cut in september. yes, 360 has closed the lead.

but never forget that if you look at the entire 2008, the 360 and the PS3 have had relatively equal sales. focus on the entire year, not just the couple of months.

Stop saying "at this point in time" and "as of right now" when you are talking about averages over time.

If I asked you how much you weigh on average, are you going to do this?

Age weight

1y  8 lbs

2y 20lbs

3y 28lbs

....

16y 150lbs

So, on average I weigh 82 lbs

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

2008 has not ended yet and the X360 will outsell the PS3 by a wide margin in the last few weeks of 2008.

2009 will be interesting and I expect the X360 to outsell PS3 week by week on a consistent basis.

no, i'd give you an average weight PER YEAR. not all years added up and divided. that's not what i'm saying.

if you bothered to read the original post, you'll see that for the entire 2008, A WHOLE YEAR, the numbers still show both consoles selling the same. I'm not averaging multiple years.

your example is absolutely and completely ridiculous btw. learn to read.

"er... you're agreeing with yourself?"

No, it's just someone who has a nearly identical user name. It's the same thing on Xbox Live, somone had already taken Whatzernam so I had to go with Whatz3rname (it's a Green Day song by the way, but spelled Whatsername originally).

And yet you have the same avatar.

I did read your post. Stop taking an average over a period and using phrases like "at this point in time" when you are NOT talking about a point in time.

Most people I know on VGChartz already know this that they are pretty much equal - its just those who are PS3 fans that swear by catch up times like June 2009 and that the gap would have been significantly cut by YE2008 due to the huge exclusives. You just have to see what they are saying for the huge exclusives and 'the gap' by YE2009.

Also I do think this gap in sales recently is more sustainable due to current events.

The lead will be bigger than ever at the end of 2008, and it will probably keep growing for at least a few months in 2009.

I don't think Sony will cut the price early in 2009, but even if they do, in the best case they'll only have a few months to decrease the gap before Microsoft slaps another price cut on the 360 (if they feel they need to). Other than price, there's little that Sony can do to diminish the gap as basically all third party exclusives have slipped through their fingers.

In conclusion, by the time the next-gen consoles are launched Sony's best case is to be a few million away from the 360. If we're extremely generous, we can say they might be about tied (not something I'd put my money on). In the worst case, the 360 will have a bigger lead than they have managed to keep until now.

look at it this way instead if the post is confusing you: Both consoles have sold equally during the lifetime of the PS3 to date.
