Well this is completely inaccurate, offensive, and clearly biased. I was hoping it would get better in the closing paragraph, but it simply got worse.

wow I agree with you. This is a waste of a thread, I thought it might be worthwhile.

Well I don't know what type of games your into but I'm sure i could make some dumb thread about it too. RPG's your so unhappy with your life you have to pretend to be someone else and make him/her successful??

Worst thread I have seen in a while.

Most people who play First Person Shooters, we can assume pretty accurately are Males ranging from 12-34 years of age. A reason why they play first person shooters so much, is because they have an inablity to do things in real life.

"Oh yea, I can pull off a headshot in 1.5 seconds...."

"I shoot at a rate of 3 shots a second in Call of Duty"

You can do all that, but you can't talk to girls or boys (I don't know how you guys roll...) or socialize with people in general. It makes you feel strong with the rankings and achievements...when they literally don't mean anything. Most guys have some form of frustration they deal with everyday, whether emotional (fanboy) or sexual, who knows. So excelling in an immersive FIRST PERSON (emphasis on FIRST PERSON) environment is supposed to make up for it.

That could be ONE REASON why the FPS genre has been successful all these years. The player is tricked into thinking they are accomplishing something, which they may not get the satisfaction of achieving in real life. I'm not saying people don't play FPS because they are fun(why do we play any game then?), but it is something to think about. Men haven't really changed (if you can even call some gamer's men these days, in which they whine like babies) in 10 years, so the needs provided by FPSs haven't changed too much alongside them.

To answer Roma's question, I'm going to have to quote myself (WTF?)

No, I don't think that is the only reason we play First Person Shooters. Hence why I said ONE REASON in CAPITAL letters. It could just be an underlying thought that you don't even notice while playing or something. As for this being biased, I don't really know how. I own 4 FPS games right now. As for inaccurate, I think I got the age bracket for FPS players pretty good.

MontanaHatchet thought it was offensive to call some gamers less than men. Notice how I said some, not all. Some could be 3 people or 3 million. If you check the fanboyism going on in message boards everywhere, I think we can all see the complaining and moaning. Men haven't changed from 1998 to 2008 (as far as I can see). I'm not talking about gamers, but man as a species. I don't mean that in a bad way either. For God's sake I am a boy myself. (I have to explain myself too much, gotta fix those OTs)

I think this is a piss poor explanation, though the promise of achievements and the ability to do things they cannot do in real life is something that draws many gamers to games. Not just fps's.

I wish I knew why FPS's were so successful, cause they are a dime a dozen. Very seldom do we see any innovation in the genre, yet they still keep churning them out.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

Thanks! It was either this, or an Asteroids vs Space Invaders graphics comparison thread.

So consider yourself lucky.

Yes, only in FPS's can people do what they can't do normally. I know that platformers are extraordinarily realistic as are most RPGs. I, for one, often leap three times my own height and travel through warp pipes. That is, when I'm not too busy fending off the orc invasions to level up my strength rating.

Seriously though, SaviorX, the reason why FPS's are so popular is because they're fun to play. The same reason why any other game genre is popular. Couldn't be simpler.

@ Mausenheimmer
Welcome to VGChartz! It's unfortunate that this was your first post, but whatever, my fault.

"I'm not saying people don't play FPS because they are fun (why do we play any game then?)..."

I mentioned that my "topic" wasn't the main reason people play FPSs. Just like every game, we play them for fun. I was just mentioning one possible reason why FPS could be successful. One reason, not THE reason.

You might be summing up a small minority but I don't really think you've got to why FPS are so popular with millions who don't fit your generalization.

I'd consider the immersion of FPS and the natural way they support an action orientated narrative. I'd also consider which genre's of films tend to be the most successful (i.e. action/excitement movies with narrative) as a clue too.

In general I guess for many most FPS (not all) offer two distinct challenges as well:

a) campaign where you get to star in your very own action movie

b) online where you get to either work as a team (cooperative) or compete with others in a very dynamic and thrilling real time nature.

FPS isn't my favourite genre (that's probably the FPS/RPG hybrid that contains games like Dues Ex, Bioshock, System Shock 2, Fallout 3, etc) but I do enjoy them when I play them and I think their appeal goes beyond your analysis.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
