Most people who play First Person Shooters, we can assume pretty accurately are Males ranging from 12-34 years of age. A reason why they play first person shooters so much, is because they have an inablity to do things in real life.

"Oh yea, I can pull off a headshot in 1.5 seconds...."

"I shoot at a rate of 3 shots a second in Call of Duty"

You can do all that, but you can't talk to girls or boys (I don't know how you guys roll...) or socialize with people in general. It makes you feel strong with the rankings and achievements...when they literally don't mean anything. Most guys have some form of frustration they deal with everyday, whether emotional (fanboy) or sexual, who knows. So excelling in an immersive FIRST PERSON (emphasis on FIRST PERSON) environment is supposed to make up for it.

That could be ONE REASON why the FPS genre has been successful all these years. The player is tricked into thinking they are accomplishing something, which they may not get the satisfaction of achieving in real life. I'm not saying people don't play FPS because they are fun(why do we play any game then?), but it is something to think about. Men haven't really changed (if you can even call some gamer's men these days, in which they whine like babies) in 10 years, so the needs provided by FPSs haven't changed too much alongside them.

To answer Roma's question, I'm going to have to quote myself (WTF?)

No, I don't think that is the only reason we play First Person Shooters. Hence why I said ONE REASON in CAPITAL letters. It could just be an underlying thought that you don't even notice while playing or something. As for this being biased, I don't really know how. I own 4 FPS games right now. As for inaccurate, I think I got the age bracket for FPS players pretty good.

MontanaHatchet thought it was offensive to call some gamers less than men. Notice how I said some, not all. Some could be 3 people or 3 million. If you check the fanboyism going on in message boards everywhere, I think we can all see the complaining and moaning. Men haven't changed from 1998 to 2008 (as far as I can see). I'm not talking about gamers, but man as a species. I don't mean that in a bad way either. For God's sake I am a boy myself. (I have to explain myself too much, gotta fix those OTs)
