Forums - Gaming Discussion - 12 Reasons Why Console Gaming is Better Then PC Gaming

With PC gaming if you so wish you can still plug in a controller, you just need to install it; not so hard.

Around the Network

Points in defence of the PC :

1. Mods - revitalise old games for nothing! Add new items, levels etc.
2. Joypads work with PC's, all Games for Windows games work with the 360 pad for instance. Mice & keyboard better for FPS and RTS games.
3. Consoles suffer from piracy too you know. Look at DS, PSP, 360 games on the torrent sites as proof!
4. Free games - flash games anyone? The web's full of them.
5. Console games have patches too. Bully on the 360 - unplayable without one. GTA IV crashes on 360 and PS3, Fable 2 (don't get me started on this one!) etc etc.
6. Cheaper hardware. How much for a 120 GB 360 hard disk?! You can buy a 1TB disk drive for a PC for less!
7. Cheaper games. Far Cry 2 on PC £25 on console £40. Just one example. Looks better too if you have a good spec PC.
8. Build your own PC - get transferable skills that may help you get a job.
9. Drivers. Get extra functionality for no cost. Graphics card drivers give you increased speed with each release (usually)
10. 3 years time. 360 and PS3 games look outdated compared to better looking PC games (you could say this is the case now!)

I am largely platform agnostic. I fail to understand why some people get overly fanboyish about what is an inanimate piece of electronics that's obsolete even before it's launched, when there are far more important things to champion, such as preventing environmental destruction or preventing millions of people dying unnecessarily from illnesses. This fact however, doesn’t mean I am not someone who doesn’t enjoy gaming as a pastime (as I have done for the last 20 years) or doesn’t have a strong interest in how the market is evolving – hence my presence on this site.

Platforms owned – PC, DS, X-Box 360, PS3, PSP and Wii.

1. No mouse and keyboard support
Ah, the very raison d'être of PC gaming. Well, guess what? Not everyone wants to play games posturing like Rick Wakeman. The joypad has been gradually refined over 20 years into the finely-honed gaming tool you see today. Pressing digital keys to move? How very 1982.

2. Playing on TV
While the PC might happily spew forth images consisting of a quadrillion pixels, the real issue here is that with a console you're playing on a nice big TV in the living groom on a comfy sofa and, if you have any sense, with a 5.1 Surround Sound system. If we wanted to slouch at a desk in a dimly-lit room we'd just stay at work.

3. It just works
Oh, how we console owners point and chuckle at PC websites where the incumbent expert attempts to explain to some poor sap that his three-month old (and thus obsolete) quad-AMD 3000 and Nvidia Orgasmo-card won't actually run Generic FPS 10 because it's got driver 1.1 instead of 1.1a. Try this: go to shop, buy game, insert disc, game runs. Bliss.

4. No need for endless upgrades
Yes, the PC is hugely upgradeable - and a bloody good job, too, otherwise you'd never get to play all those games built with cutting edge technology by crazy Scandinavian ex-demo hackers. And anyway, a console is upgradeable: when the next Xbox or PlayStation comes out, we sell the old one and buy a new one. Easy.

5. Cheaper hardware
We've heard all the arguments and excuses. Face it: if you really want a decent PC to play games (and no we don't want to build one ourselves) prices start around £500. And if you want to play games at any sort of quality, your (sigh) 'rig' is more like a grand. For that you could buy all three consoles, extra controllers and the top 10 games of the year.

6. The big 'p'
The PC is gradually becoming the ginger step-child of the developer community. Even stalwarts like Valve are moving to consoles because, let's be honest, piracy is eroding the PC world from within like a mercilessly enthusiastic cancer. It's becoming less and less viable for developers whose budgets are spiralling ever upwards. Recently the World of Goo developer suggested piracy of his game was at a rate of about 90 per cent. That shit just ain't funny any more.

7. The Japanese
They may not be to everyone's taste, but PC gamers do miss out on a whole raft of amazing games crafted by genius Japanese developers whose focus is mainly consoles. Crazy stuff like Patapon, Katamari, Okami, Vib Ribbon, PaRappa... not to mention hordes of amazing JRPGs.

8. No first-party support
Because the PC is an open platform, there's no ownership and therefore no desire to drive it forward. Microsoft is way too busy with the Xbox to bother about Games For Windows, and so we either get the biggest games first with PC ports following months after, or we get exclusives that never appear on PC at all. Still, at least you have, y'know, Crysis. And Crysis 2

9. The lack of patch mentality
Okay, we'll admit it - console games do get patched, but infrequently and not to any great extent. Truth is that, for the majority of console titles, when we buy our games from the shop they're actually finished. Which is nice.

10. Innovation, innovation, innovation
It's true that, when it gets it right, PC gaming is awesome; beautiful, high-res, online fragfests. But when was the last time you played something truly innovative? Just look around you at the games coming to consoles. You may mock the Wii, but when was the last time you had a drunken four-player tennis match in your PC games room?

11. Four-player family fun
Yes, we know PCs have been online for years, but what if you want to interact with people you actually know in the comfort of your own home? Apart from the aforementioned Wii activities, there are great quiz games like SceneIt! And Buzz, endless Mario Party games, dance mat games, Eye Toy games, karaoke games... the list goes on and on.

12. Perception
Have you ever seen that episode of South Park where the kids are playing World of Warcraft? You know the fat, pale, pizza-faced guy with the wrist support slouched in his chair? That's you that is. You are a PC gamer.

I agree with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11

I don't think the others are really an advantage..

What do you think??

Oh boy,who ever wrote that hasnt played Computers,i can easly write the same about consoles, but let me put my input.

1.Controler is good for most games how ever for more realistic fps games,Mouse + Keyboard own the sensative joystick.

2.He says Console is better because bigger TV? What about a big ol 30 inch comp screen at twice the output of the 360?

3.He dosent know that Consoles are already out dated, infact when they launched they had medicore hardware.

4.Since PC games have better graphics than Consoles you make it a negative, dont forget the 600$ launch of a new system,oh wait you cant play your old games how sad.

5.Again just because PC games have better graphics than Consoles you turn it into a negative, have fun playing 5 year old graphics on your new 360.

6.When more companys become like Steam, where you buy it once and put your code into your steam account and you play it,even if you uninstall it and lose your disc you can redownload it for free.

7.PC have mods,Mods cant take any game and make them better, look at Battlefield 2,They made the arcade game into a Realistic game and its 10x more better than the arcade version,oh yea they dont come with a 60$ price tag.

8.PC dosent need First pary support because it has alot of third party suppot and small companys can make  games chealy for the PC.

9.Like Mercenaries 2 was finished? You cant put a platform down because one lazy company didnt finsih the game, and PC gets FREE map packs and updates that make the game fun again, and dont forget Companys dont drop support of there PC games like console,it took how many months to get a TF2 patch on 360?

10.Mods = Innovative,Waggle control = party games

11.yet people say that consoles are "hardcore" lmao.

12.Console games are 12 year old kids cussing on Xbox live?

Just pointing out facts.

Agreed, especially number 12.

AND NOW......

15 Reasons why PC Gaming is better (ok, or at least just as fulfilling as) Console Gaming

1.  Real RPG's that are ACTUALLY RPG's - not forced progression to level up with minimal choice of your characters attitudes, choices, dialog and actual play style.

2.  The birthplace of shooters with substance (Half-life, Deus Ex, Duke Nukem etc. v.s. Gears, Resistance and Killzone).  Also... keyboard/mouse FTW.

3.  Point and click graphical adventures.  Sure the best ones may be old, and the Wii does have a couple, but DoTT, S&MHtR, IJaFoA, TD, SQ, KQ and even B&BiVS are still a blast to play today.  Bonus if you know the acronyms.

4.  Racing sims that are actually racing sims. I always chuckle whenever people start Forza v.s. GT threads and the proponents of each claim that only their pick is "a true simulation" when neither are even close.

5.  RTS the way it was meant to be ... and speaking of that.....

6.  Supreme Commander

7.  Starcraft

8.  Try running Photoshop on your console.  And yes, this counts because Photoshop was the only game that Mac mavens had for years.

9.  Red Alert ... the Original - though the third is good if you want to hear Sulu say, "All your base are belong to us."

10.  Valve and Blizzard - they are the Nintendo of their respective fields, and they have supported other consoles, but not with their best namely.....

12.  Starcraft 2 (should be called Starcrack 2)

13.  Diablo 3

14.  Diablo 3

15.  Diablo 3 (thats right, 3 times!)

Hmm. It's different, and some things are better, but some are worse so it evens out really. The main issues are piracy and the impact on games these days in terms of shrinking support

Most of the rest can be pretty much negated by sticking your PC next to your HD TV - it'll be quieter than a 360 anyway, play games in higher res on your nice HD TV, allow any controls you want and of you go.

I believe though that consoles are increasingly suffering from certain annoying PC issues though:

1) patches are on the increase and will continue to do so the more you have games like Gears and Fallout whose roots are firmly in PC level complexity

2) it just works, so long as you have right firmware version, connect to internet okay, etc.

As for innovation - right... I really don't see much more innovation on console than PC TBH.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I don't agree with this list.

Other people have given their own arguments that I find sufficient enough so I don't really feel like diving into this yet.

I will say that having both a PC and console for games is good since PC's aren't soley for games, and if it can run games well it can run other software well too.

For consumers. Basically more entertainment comfort, less hassle and very importantly many top exclusive games which will never be released on the PC.

For developers, long lasting standards for game developers to optimize for and rely on. Far less the issue of piracy (on the PS3 so far, non existent).

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

Well... I really don't care about the list... but console gaming is far superior to PC gaming.

I think the list is too flawed to be discussed, well, any of these lists is flawed by definition

the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!

Seriously, I'd agree with points three and eleven, but that's pushing it a bit.

Still, this list isn't really serious. See the 12 reasons why PC gaming is better than console gaming for a similarly fun read, just from the other side.

They forgot local multiplayer.

I know every argument for and against, and yes, these are the arguments for console gaming.

Now, PC gamers are a very defensive lot. They are remiss to admit that console gaming has ANY advantages, which is just rediculious.

Console gaming has many significant advantages over PC gaming, just as PC gaming has many significant advantages over console gaming.

In the past, PC gaming was god. As graphics evened, HD become a norm, and multiplats became the way of things, console gaming has caught up.

Apples and oranges.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.
