It's 1080p upscaling through hdmi.
What I did was instead of going Blu-Ray right now, I bought a badass surround sound system, and a cheap DVD upscaler.
The theory is, it's better to buy your sound system seperate from your player, so you can always switch out players.
If you buy a home theatre with a player, that player is permanently attached to the sound system, which limits the inputs(in theory, as the company assumes you'll be using their DVD player), but if you buy seperate, you can switch out players every few years, but keep your sound.
I needed something with 2 optical audio inputs. No need for HDMI as there is no discernable difference between optical and hdmi. The only issue is that some things don't support optical, but all of mine do, and HDMI input is more expensive than necessary with no functional return for me.
I took the 150 extra dollars I saved on the Sony BR player, and put it towards a better sound system. That way I can make sure BR is gonna take off, and next christmas pick up the same player for the super-cheap, and in the meantime, stick with my blockbuster online DVD-9 rental system.
I don't buy movies, anyway.
