Forums - Gaming Discussion - 2009 will be the Year of...

I disagree. 1994/1995 were the years of RTS, not 2009.

shio, you know that the Anno series is not really RTS?

Empire: Total War looks very impressive, but it also looks like you need two quad scores duct together, not to mention the same screenshot was already shown in numerous 2008 PC lineup threads.

2009 is the year of the same all over again with more glitter and glamour. Besides, we all know, regarding RTS, 2009 will be the year of Starcraft 2, nothing else (and 2010 will be the year of ARPG, in other words: Diablo 3).

Lineup threads show one thing: Gamers are conservative people (me included of course)

I'm with konnichiwa here:
I don't want RTS galore again (a genre that was never in trouble on PC for a second), I'd like to see real starving classic PC genres revived by some surprising high quality games, such as space sims on the same level as those from Origin/LucasArts or adventures on the same level as those from LucasArts/Westwood/Sierra.

Anyway, I have to admit: 2009 will be another good year for RTS fans.

oh yes.

A return to Privateer/Wing commander on the consoles, or a revisit of X-wing v Tie fighter.

That would make me very happy.

And as for adventure games, well they still come out in the indie world but a solid revisit by some big name studios would be awesome (theres another Leisure Suit Larry coming out though, and I don't think anyones going to buy it :( )

Yes, Lafiel, I know that Anno has RTS elements, but its focus is clearly on city/infrastructure building. As you said yourself, it has only some fighting. It's a typical game from the German speaking area. We love RTS, but we also love building sims.

Anno - a series which I like by the way - has more in common with the Settlers imo than with Dune II, Warcraft, C&C, AoE and Starcraft (those are the classic RTS games which defined the genre as we know it today).

can not wait for Empire total war roll on 2009

Endwar looks pretty sweet.

Halo Wars is looking VERY promising.

As for the PC, there are alot of RTS's, but the PC hasnt really been a massive presence in the circles that determine the "Year of" catagories. Im sure it'll just be the Year of The Shooter like the last 2 years. :-/

PC has the best lineup almost every year and always has the most games, so PC is the biggest factor to determine the "Year of...". For example, 2007 was the year of FPS and it was PC that gave the most for it, not consoles: Crysis, Stalker, stand-alone Team Fortress 2.

Hey dont attack me, I have a powerful rig and have been a PC jockey since the early 90s. But you are kidding yourself. Compair the sales of the PC versions of Bioshock, Call of Duty 4 and Orange Box to their Console versions and you should see a massive difference.

To say PC has the best line up is moot, it also typically has the worst sales almost catagorically, meaning the Console versions are reaching more people and giving their companies far better returns. If 10 RTS's are released on the PC and they are all rated 10s but they all only sell 100k each, and 10 Shooters that are rated as 8s are released on Consoles and they all sell 5 million copies it will be the year of the shooter. period.

Its just the way business is.

I own all three current consoles and a great gaming rig, now thats out of the way.

This space Reserved for the Nuggets of Wisdom dropped by Bladeforce:

"Why post something like this when all it will get is PS3 owners blinded to reality replying? BOTH THE PS3 AND BLUE-RAY WILL NOT LAST 3 YEARS! TECHNOLOGY CHANGED TOO FAST!"

"is it Wii FIt that has sold as many as PS3's sold? Thats a LOL Look at the total sales of software is it just me that sees Nintendo titles hitting 10m+ and you say they arent making a difference? Another LOL!"

"Hell, with all the negative hype Sony spin, people just aren't interested cost is too high and to get the true HD experience (1080p, 7.1 surround) you will need a $1000+ system. THAT IS GOING TO DO IT IN A RECESSION! PS4 will not happen"

YEAH!!! Dawn of War 2!!!

Late reply, but according to gamerankings (ignoring Ga's errors), Xbox 360 had 17 FPS releases in 2007 while PC had 82 FPS releases, five times more than X360. There is alot more competition on PC, much harder to make a sale.

But ofcourse we can compare the sales of those 3 games:

Xbox 360

Call of Duty 4 - 6.6 millions
Bioshock - 2 millions
Orange Box - 800k

PC

Call of Duty 4 - Unknown, but possible 10 millions. Still selling and one of the top 5 best selling PC games in July-Sept '08
Orange Box - Outselling PS360 combined by double digits percentage, and still selling
Bioshock - 1 million, still selling (figure from 5 months ago, also before Bioshock's huge weekend deal of Steam)

So 1 game sold better on X360, 1 sold better on PC, and 1 is likely to be selling better on PC. Call of duty 4 is, and always been one of the top selling PC games since it's release.

Sorry. 2009 is going to be the year of the PS3. We already called dibs!

I'm sure Empire: Total War will be fine and dandy after the fifth patch, but if recent history is anything to judge by, none of y'all should buy it on Day One.

Oh, and nice list.
