First of all "nintendo" isn't known by the "casuals" in general they know the wii and they might know the ds. Some do some do not. They know the wii because they've seen it on tv, have it or know someone who does. They don't really know nintendo.
The playstation brand as a gaming platform is the most welknown by all groups beside the PC. The reason this is different is because most people don't connect the ds or the wii or the gamecube. Simply because their names are so different and your regular joe won't do the research to find out that they are all made from the same company. On the other hand when you say playstation it can be any console from sony. I don't mention microsoft because i really don't know anyone who has a xbox.

What? Did I really just read that? If you think the Playstation brand is better known than the overall name Nintendo, you have got to be smoking the good stuff. In fact, straight through the PS1's lifespan, nongamers called it and every other console "the Nintendo". This goes back from 86 and finally started seperating into Playstation, Nintendo and Xbox around 2002 or so. So all those casuals, who used to be nongamers, remember "the Nintendo" that their kids played back in the 80s and 90s. There was no NES, SNES, N64, etc for these people, only "the Nintendo". Now with the popularity of the Wii and DS, people have come full circle to playing "The Nintendo" again. Though most of the casuals like calling it "The Wii" better, less syllables I guess.

wot.. and to hawk too.. i've never head anyone call a playstation a nintendo.. infact when they would mention any gaming machine they would refere to it as a playstation. Or by it's name (when they knew) What the hell ? i don't think i know anyone who knows nintendo better :\ what you are saying is completely alien to me.
hmm... i guess the world isn't so small afterall.
Unlike you guys, i live in europe ("sonyland") in Denmark which appears to be one of the only countrys on earth where the ps3 seems to be selling more than the wii :P (not saying it does, cause i don't know if it does, but it seems like it do)
It might be a reason why that is different.
@atma998 my point is that while microsoft is whole heartedly attacking sony in many ways only responds on oaccasions while they most of the time try to avoid the nonsense, and that the only thing holding sony back from taking more of the casual market is price.
I didn't mean to derail the thread, i simply thought that the comment was a bit of a cheapshot. And i don't think it was alright what the EB sales clerk did either. :)
