Forums - Website Topics - VGChartz gave me a rootkit infection :(

I was browsing the site with IE7 yesterday instead of Firefox, clicked on the forums listing and noticed some outlook installation popups suddenly appear, and next thing I knew had a full blown rootkit infection :/

Removed it with some anti-rootkit software.  Made sure my machine was up to date, then went back to the site to see if it would happen again in IE, and sure enough it did :O

Has anyone else had this issue with vgchartz?

It's usually one of the Ad companies.... This has happened before. Usually it's just a plain old virus. Since you're the only one complaining so far it'll most likely be whomever injects your ads for your area.

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

I had the same problem with a virus from vg chartz. In IE7 my anti-virus often detects a trojian virus from vg chartz with a .htm file extension. A pop up then tries to enable a download a the top of the browser, but my anti-virus always shuts it down and quarantines the .htm temporary internet file. After a number of times seeing this happen on vgchartz, I switched over to Firefox 3 and I have not been having the problem anymore

Firefox > IE7
I'm never going back to IE.

Yeah, the virus alerts before have been mostly harmless little javascript deals or w/e, and the AV has always caught it. This one took my computers pants down and went to town.... which is crazy since I'm fully up to date on my Windows updates and vulnerabilities, AV up to date every day

Well, I think few people, if any, have complained about it before because I'd wager most people use Firefox or another unconventional web browser.

Sucks that it happens, but I figured as much would happen.

If you like IE7, this add-on is your new best friend.

I don't like IE7 :( I use it a lot when working on customer sites (as well as IE6)... and sometimes I get lazy if I don't have firefox open and just click a new tab for IE and start browsing. Definitely have learned my lesson. I will check out ie7pro though...
