Forums - Gaming Discussion - DS Games Selling Badly: Or Why Install Base isn't the End All Be All

The DS has the highest software sales the Japanese market has ever seen. I don´t understand your point?

Yes the DS has sold a ton of copies of games. Yes, the DS has the largest install base ever in Japan. Neither of those two things means that an individual game is automatically going to sell really well even if it is a good game from a highly reputable developer. That's the point.

That's also why you don't see all devs jump ship from 360/PS3 development to the Wii. Even when the Wii exceeds 50% of the market, you're not going to see this happen.

Ugg. This argument again? THe devs are not jumping ship, but expanding out to the Wii now. Since it takes an average of 2 years, the devs who were on the fence will have begun this year with R&D will announce those titles for the Wii next year and have them released by 2010.  SOME devs are taking titles away from the HD consoles.

You might ask why, and that's simple. What would be seen as low sales for a HD console game can still be a good profit for a Wii game, since you're talking about a several million dollar difference in development cost. A Wii game doesn't HAVE to sell a million copies to be successful, whereas a HD version has to hit at least a mil to break even for some higher end games like GTA4. The population has moved to embrace the Wii, and the devs move to embrace the population. Its as classic as native americans moving  where the buffalo roam off to. Simple survival.

to the OP: I know that you try to make a point,a valid and true one. The problem is:

*you're just using 2 GAMES as an example

*you're just using 2 SIMPLE UNKNOWN GAMES as an example

*You're missing focusing in one miserable week

*you're cherrypicking and that's never trustful

*You're just focusing in japan whom had different changing tastes

Next time, use more veritable data to support your beloved PSP instead of twisting facts.

The worst thing about the examples taken is Inazuma 11.
It was not advertised for the simple fact that its advertisement is the Anime that should start this week or next. Because, you know, that's a time where new anime series are released, and Inazuma 11 is one of them.
The game was released before the Anime, and already sold well, especially for a new IP. If the anime works very well, expect to see the game have good legs.

Besides, this is the time after Obon holidays, where sales of videogames are poor, and it will be like that for weeks.

And again, the claim isn't that the DS will make games sell better. The claim is that the low development costs make the games almost always profitable. The first week of two game hasn't disproven that.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

i just think the market has changed sooo much since DS and Wii, hit, very revolutionary, but why dont i like my wii,

A larger install base is always better for the developers since they don't need such a high attach rate to gain the same amount of revenue. Who's to say that the chance of the game selling will be higher when it's released on a console with a much smaller pool of potential buyers?
