Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why the Wii isn't HD

the graphics are sh!t. Playing it in high definition is like rubbing it in your face... thank god the games are good.

The Hardware isn’t powerful enough at a reasonable price.

LOL the base 360 costs less than a Wii now.

2) The industry wasn’t ready yet

Bullshit, "HD" games have been developed for PC for half a decade. You can always make games look worse and cheaper if you think you can make money with that.

3) Developers aren’t ready yet

Yeah sure. Because of this Call of Duty 4 looks so bad. Insomniac releases a AAA game a year and of course games have never been delayed.

Nintendo didn't go HD because

1) They went casual and (correctly) assumed that graphics wouldn't be so important for that market.

2) It did minimize their risk, should they fail.

3) They wouldn't have been able to compete directly anyway against Microsoft's Development Experience and Sony's technological, PS2 image and media advantages. The Gamecube shows how trying this worked out.

4) They simply focused their ressources on the motion controls. And it worked out.

What relevance does that have to do with the thread? Also I wouldn't call beautiful games like Metroid Prime 3, and Super Mario Galaxy sh!t graphics. Compared to some ps360 games technically they may be bad, but that doesn't make them sh!t. Definately an upgrade from last generation.

Cartridges use less power and have quicker access time over disc based medium.

There is a case sample where 1000 HD TV owners where the Wii had higher share. HD owners should not be considered the same as upstream console owners. These are two different market groups.

Well said, HappySqurriel. What interest me most about your post is that you're digging into what's likely to be Nintendo's motives, not necessarily what Nintendo releases in their public statements.

Wii in SD is quite the turnoff for someone who has an HDTV. It looks nasty.

Really?? strange when I play SMG or MP3 for example on my 1080p HD Projector on a 116" screen  the graphics look extremly good.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

yeah Happy Squirrel is awesome. He theorizes and finds evidence over stating everything as unproven facts.

When will people understand that graphics have reached the "good enough" barrier last generation?

Good enough does not mean that graphics can't go anu further, because they can (just look at the most recent PC games). It means that graphics are no longer the determinating factor to make a game or console the best of them all. That value is not as relevant as it was back then.

Nintendo realized this better than Sony and Microsoft and went with a new direction with DS and Wii. Those systems are the evolution of entirely new values (gameplay, family, and most of all fun) that are far more relevant than graphics this generation.

I think thats only because M$ isn't making any money of it's sales and the nintendo is making truckloads of $$$ of wii sales.

Not on my Hdtvs, especially if you use component cables. I only heard it looks nasty on LCDs. I only noticed a few jaggies on y one plasma, and my other tube? I think thats it. I do hook it up to my Computer monitor also which is a 19inch lcd, and I think its pretty unnoticable because of the smaller screen size. Also Jaggies aren't really a big deal imo. Especially when you are far away from the TV, and the TV isn't above 40 inches. They are barely noticable. I would rather superior graphical features, and higher framerates in 480p than the oposite in 720p.

dude it looks bad.... everything esle looks good but last gen games (and wii) look bad. nintendo should have made a system that looks good on all TV's because HD tvs are selling at a FAR better rate then any other TV..

And my TV is 40 inches so the wii looks bad really bad.
