I'm in Eastern Canada and we've had a number of thunderstorms over the last couple days. These thunderstorms, accompanied by lots of rain, have woken me up in the early morning two or three times this week. I swear I was almost hit (or at least it seemed like it) when a storm started almost instantaneously overhead a week ago. Just yesterday, a house downtown was hit and burned down as a result.

It's pretty common to get a thunderstorm here and there during the summer with the pressure changes and whatnot but the occurrence of storms lately have been unusually frequent.

In Calgary we had some nice flooding, which has happened before but is rare. I think it was the worst one in recent history. Plus we're supposed to get a tornado tonight, and I think it's the first one I've had here since I moved here 15 years ago.

But nothing exceptional.

The flooding 2 summers ago was cause by a combination of higher glacial melting and higher rainfall. Neither is particularly unusual on their own (they happen every few years) but on occasion happen together and cause flooding through out southern Alberta. Alberta is more known for our dry weather yet has many towns with names like High River for a very good reason.

Edit: On top of that tornados are a common site throughout Alberta but because of how large and sparsely populated the province is they rarely hit townsites; Calgary is slightly protected by the windflows off of the mountain but a large tornado hitting the city is an eventuality.

OR, Global Warming....

we've had a drought here (Melbourne), so bring on the rain I say! Stage 4 water restrictions were getting annoying...

we have actually had a fair amount of rain (And flooding) here, but it is the middle of winter so it's not exactly unusual.

Also, going from pouring rain to sunny and right in 2 hours is weird for you guys? We have that happen in literally 10 minutes. And then 20 minutes later it starts raining again... Although lately we've been happy to get any rain at all.

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

We had a fairly sunny day today and suddently there were strong winds blowing and rain pouring out for like 15 minutes then had a blackout! Wind was continuing to blow and then the sky was back to normal... O_O FREAKY!

I see you think that's the culprit and I think I do kinda agree with you!

Another reason for all the rain could just be because it's Wimbledon tennis season.

 Agree

Must be global warming if the weather isn't the same from week to week.

I've read your posts in the global warming thread. I thought about refuting your points and deconstructing your bizarre twists of logic and attempting to educate you in terms basic science and even more basic fact.

I figured it isn't worth it. Instead I'll just say that you obviously have no idea what your talking about. I can only assume your ignorance and arrogance towards climate and climate change is based in political motivations.

Agree with all of that, except that the flooding has been quite unusual. A good chunk of the eastern part of Victoria is completely underwater.

This after the massive floodings in northern NSW not that long ago (may still be going) around Maitland.

Still - rain is good. The more we can get the better!

...

Also from news reports, I have heard that large chunks of China are currently in a terrible drought - whereas other parts have been hit by nasty floods (100+ people killed?).
