Forums - Gaming Discussion - FF13 Port status

Who here believes that the ps3 version of ff13 is a port and

that the 360 version is a port of a port?

Important EDIT: (supercedes other edits) http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/889/889012p1.html

this link provides an excerpt from e3 where a SE representative clarified that the game was being developed for the ps3 and then being ported to 360.

EDIT: Here I will compile a list of everyones opinions, if you do not vote either way i will try and figure out what your decision is judging by the content of your post.

EDIT2: If anyone has any reason why this is against forum rules, please let me know, i am new to the site, and the rules do not state that any of this is wrong. To clarify, I am trying to depict the prevelancy of a certain falacy that some have subscribed to for which i believe was developed as a slight against a certain console for no particular reason.

EDIT3: After 10 votes it is very interesting to see the results with 3 for being a port, 4 against, and 3 unsure. It's neat to see the split here.

EDIT4: some people do not seem to understand the question, here is a definition of port courtesy of the infallible wikipedia.

"In computer science, porting is the process of adapting software so that an executable program can be created for a computing environment that is different from the one for which it was originally designed (e.g. different CPU, operating system, or third party library). The term is also used in a general way to refer to the changing of software/hardware to make them usable in different environments."

wiki also defines this of game engines

"These tools are generally provided in an integrated development environment to enable simplified, rapid development of games in a data-driven manner"

EDIT 5: we are not using the term port as a translation from one plat to another. All games are ports in that sense. and all programs are ports of paper, or the brain. Right now the console is the primary target and the pc version falls by the wayside. We are talking about which platform it is being developed "FOR" like in the definition.

A port of what?

the pc?

I don't know, I'm using this thread as a "proof" for another thread.

A member of the forums believes that crystal tools is "porting" the ps3 version to the ps3.

the guy is fj-wares. I'm starting to think he's messing with me. Does anyone know if this guy is a trickster in that regard???

he keeps posting the wiki definition, and i keep trying to tell him that if it is developed FOR a console then it is not a port, regardless of what it is programmed ON, be it a computer, a rival console, or a piece of cheese.

FFXIII is being developed "for" PC. Both PS3 and 360 versions will be ports of the PC version.

How can it be developed for PC, when it isn't even announced for PC???

How can it be ported to consoles, when they said they need to finish it for ps3 and then they can port it to 360?

It's not a port when the game is being initially made for the PS3. Crystal tools is a multi-platform engine though, specifically designed to work across the 360, PS3, and the PC. And it also partially works on the Wii (not all aspects though, for obvious reasons).

I believe the idea was to create an engine that ports from one console to another cheaply and easily. not one that works for all consoles.

Wait so when do we get to see a PC based FFXIII game. Wait aren't all games started on a PC then finalized on DEV kits?

here we go with FFXIII again. This game is starting to drive me insane. I really want to buy it but if I see one more post saying FFXIII or FF13 then I'm going to.....probably reply with this exact statement because I can't think of anything else to do right now.

and does it really matter that much?

sometimes it's important to let people know they are wrong :P

im not doing it for me, i'm doing it for them.

@Alucard

so is that a vote for ps3 version being a port or not a port? I'm gunna "port" you over to the "not a port" side since that is where you seem to be leaning.

The development of FFXIII is PC-based, and the main reason of this is to reduce the cost of development, which is why many companies are doing that right now. Capcom, for example, is developing for PC first and port it to consoles (DMC4, SFIV, Bionic Commando, etc... are all developed on PC first).

Ofcourse, when they're developing for PC they're probably taking to mind to develop the games that would translate well for consoles, which probably results in a unoptimized version for PC.
