I don't get this one quote. I mean, isn't that how things are supposed to work? It works to make the turnaround time faster (you get a "new" one as soon as they receive yours).

My only guess with this is if you have a 20gb hard drive and they swap your entire console with a refurb. That could be a problem, cause your profile, saved games, movies, files, etc, are all on that hard drive. Other than that, I wouldn't complain. And, as I understand, you're supposed to take the hard drive out when you send your console in for repair. Or at least, I would, since the hard drive isn't the part of the console that is known to fail.

You don't send out your harddrive, they specifically tell you to keep it and just send out the console.

The 20gig harddrive comes off with a push of a button.

I would have thought it was even higher than that, but this is just a small sample.

What I gathered from the article:

1) According to an EB Games store manager:

"The failure rate must be well over 30%"

So even excluding those who dealt with Microsoft directly, the failure rate around launch was still well above the figures claimed by Microsoft at the retailers end.

2) Retailers do not have reliable figures as:

"In fact when we sell the Xbox 360 we tell customers to contact Microsoft if they "Ever have a problem"."

The bulk of repeat failures are probably handled by Microsoft directly, bypassing retailer contact.

3) Yet it seems clear the XBox 360 is not a sturdy product:

"Out the Nintendo Wii, the PS3 and the Xbox 360 the Microsoft product is the only one that we have had constant problems with."

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

Ten times more than Microsoft's first admitted percentage, and you think it would still be higher? Either you are a basher, or you believe every comment of failure, on blogs and message boards, are real. This is the web. Anyone can just say their 360 broke, even if it didn't, just because they want to be on the bandwagon.

I'm not claiming the failure rates are low. I'm just poininting out you seem to be basing your assumption on unreliable data.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

people who are upset are louder than those that are happy...

like me, no problems... ever... even after 2 consoles.

Bullshit.

Is it also the case that people who are louder are the only ones who happen to get 3-7 failures?  Many gaming journos get 3+ failures from brand new units each time (using in-store warranties).

expected higher numbers, still 30% is pretty bad.

Yeah, heres the thing. If I sent off my console free of scratches or blemeshis, maybe even a few stickers or possibly a nice airbrush job, I would expect to get the same console back. When you send your TV in for repair....even at Best Buy....you get your tv back. Not a refurbished on, your set only fixed. I would be pissed if I got someone elses used one.

i find it hard to believe any consumer electronics would have a failure rate of 30%. and it's only basically a computer. i don't think it's that high.

the Wii is an epidemic.

I got nothing against the XBOX 360. Don't own one. I do have a cousin that owns one and I love to play on it. It's a fun machine with nice games. And, it has broken down twice since he got it. Fist time they replaced it. Second time it was just outside the year warranty and he had to pay $120 or so to get it fixed. That is bullshit. And that is one reason I'm hesitant to buy an XBOX 360.

This has really put me off the 360. I'd love to play some of the games coming out for it, such as Blue Dragon and Trusty Bell. However I'm not going to pay for a console that will likely break after a year or two. I'll just stick with my PS3 for now and hope that Microsoft fixes this problem sometime before the Next-gen Xbox comes out.

No, the problem is that it's a REFURB, cheap bastards, plus who in the hell ever offered only a 90 day warranty on electronics(I know it's changed since then, but that's BS to begin with)? I still say that you are an utter dumbass if you get the newest superest gizmo without an extended warranty(WITH a replacement clause, make sure to read the fine print)
