Forums - Sony Discussion - Why did MGS 4 fail to move consoles?

Well, it did moved consoles, if Iremeber it increased the numbers by a 280% in the first day, and the bundles where sold out the very first day.

The problem, I think, is that SONY didn't prepare as many bundles as they should, I think they only had 200,000 in America that sold out very quickly, but 200,000 for a game like that wasn't enough.

End of Year prediction:

wii: 37 m

360: 24 m

PS3: 20 m

I'm not referring to widespread sales in this, but I do know that after my friends who refused to buy a ps3 saw mgs4 on my ps3 they immediately went out and bought the bundle pack for the 80gb and mgs4, sure that's only three people, but it's a point that mgs4 is getting people who wouldn't have even entertained the idea of buying a ps3 to buy one.

They had 70k bundles, not 200k.

Actually, MGS4 move more PS3 consoles at launch then 360 did in the Halo 3 launch.

Solely due to the mega boost in Japan (+70k).

Currently playing on PS3: God of War III

Currently playing on Xbox360: Final Fantasy XIII

Currently playing on NDS: Chrono Trigger

Besides, unlike Halo3, Uncharted or Call of Duty 4 I didn't really see many adds on the TV.

It's not niche. There are seveal successful stealth-action games, and Metal Gear was the first. A lot of people bought the console for Metal Gear, either before or after the game came out. Let's see what happens when the bundle is restocked.

Small bump? If I'm not mistaken, sales went up 180% AND put the PS3 past the Wii....far from a small bump

Well I wouldn't call it a small bump but it wasn't the saviour that Sony fans were hoping for. The weekly worldwide hardware sales for the PS3 the week before the release of MGS4 was around 150,000. Then it doubled to over 300,000 on the release week. Then the following weeks were about 170,000 and 160,000. So sales are almost back to normal for the PS3. And you do realize that any week the PS3 beats the Wii it is because of supply issues right?

So theoretically, if the PS3 amazingly sold about 800k (joking) and beats the Wii out, it's because of Wii short supply? I could turn around and say that when the Wii beats the PS3, it's because of 80GB supply shortage....but that's nonsense. I just don't understand why you believe that when the Wii loses out, for only one week might I add, that it's because of super short supply. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Wii has sold about the same (high numbers) week in and week out. The PS3 passed it for one week. So now that given week that the PS3 won, the Wii was in short supply? When it sold nearly the same as the week prior? Come on now

Its niche because of the storyline and cutscenes not really the gameplay

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

Because the PS3 still costs $400 and it doesn't have much of a library to back MGS4 up with.
