Nor any new console for that matter. I feel like this gen has just started to really take off and these consoles will have longer lifespans then the last. Reason being because in an effoert to outdo each other  M$ and $ony  made consoles that were really ahead of their time.  The games of 2008 are mindblowing but from what I understand nothing is even close to what these  consoles can really push.  I think theres a LOT more juice to squeese out of these machines much more then there has been in the past.  Perhaps less so with the Wii but the way it's selling  I don't see  the big N  making a new console either.

However, on reflection I find that I don't agree with you 100%.

These consoles are not really anymore ahead of their time than the XBox, Gamecube, PS2, Dreamcast, N64, Playstation or Saturn were ... What will really determine when the next generation begins is how third party publishers are reacting to the sales of the current generation of consoles.

It is very difficult to say what is currently happening with third party publishers because (as a consumer) there is a lag between them changing their policies and it being noticeable in upcomming releases; but I think it is safe to assume that the low cost of development and high sales for the Wii are having a considerable impact on their plans. With how long it takes to develop a HD game (mostly 2 to 3 years) publishers would have to see some reason why they should devote the massive resources towards HD games in the next 6 months for these systems to have many games in 2011 ...

Personally, I don't see that happening and I expect that Sony and Microsoft would rather release a new system in 2010/2011 then watch their system have no game releases for 12 to 18 months.

I agree with u thinks its too early for new console every genaration should be over 5 years but thats my opinion.

2011 for Microsoft. Nintendo and Sony in 2012. So 6 years after the launches of the consoles currently on the market.

While I want to agree with Leetgeek, since I really hate having to spend money on hardware, I think HappySqurriel is right. Still, 2010 means the X-Box would only have been out for five years, and after the X-Box's lifespan I think cutting two generations short is going to breed some resentment in some gamers.

MS already said they will be the first with a new console again. Surely they will announce the next xbox in 2009 and sell them in 2010.

I think Nintendo will start selling a new HD-console in 2010 too, but will sell the wii further on.

so... next year a new xbox is announced? Can't wait. It will be the first xbox I buy at launch probably.

I hope..That Microsoft doesn´t bring new console before 2011..
