Forums - Sales Discussion - Which console will have the most million sellers?

You don't need to sell 100 million console units to have a lot of million sellers.

So far this year the Wii has been unable to close the gap with the 360 and the next 3 months releases look more in favor or the 360 than in the Wii in term of additional million sellers.

Like I said earlier in the end the Wii will dominate the 5 million+ sellers but the 360 will keep the lead for million sellers.

The PS3 won't be able to catch the 360 as 99% of the multiplatforms titles selling 1 million+ on the PS3 will do so on the 360 too and there is no way Sony will release 30+ first party million sellers than the 360 ( Sony will release more but not that much more...).

PS : The Wii will sell a lot more software but the success of its heavy titles actually does not give it the edge in this fight.

While Mario Kart sells 10 million units the 360 users tend to spread their purchase accross more titles resulting in less total software but more million sellers...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

I think 360 will beat Wii. Even though Wii will have a huge user base many casual gamers don't buy that many games and don't buy games every month. 360 seems like it would sell more software. When the Ps3 catchs up to it then the multiplat games will be close and rest will rely on exclusives, which I think Ps3 wins in exclusive million sellers. The exclusives lately for Xbox haven't been selling that well imo compared to what future Ps3 exclusives will sell. I don't see Too Human or IU to sell a million. Games like LBP, SOCOM, Resistance 2, God of War 3, FFV13 and more will help Ps3 catch up but never get to second place I think. At the end it will be 360>Wii>Ps3

Well, keep in mind that while IU and Too Human might not do a million, Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Forza 3 and all the Halo related projects are pretty much guranteed million sellers for MS. Plus, FFXIII will also be a million seller for the 360. I just don't see there being alot that can close the gap by the necessary amount without exclusive 3rd party support, which is quickly going the way of the dinosaur.

Let's wait and see, after more games start to get announced for the Wii, the chances of 360 or PS3 getting many more million sellers will depend on third parties shifting or not attention to the Wii. The crappy mini game/sport/shovelware flood is pretty much over (There haven't been many announcements of shovelware coming to the Wii besides of the hundreds that are yet to be released but were announced some time ago, when the success of the Wii was still not a given.

Now that 3rd parties are starting to realize that Wii is heading in the right direction, expect more exclusive games and teams to be released/ be focused on the Wii. The first ones that have already started and almost finished the shift are the Japanese devs, with the exception of SE which will not support the Wii for at least 2 years, since all their projects are HD.
Western devs are beginning to announce more and more games for the Wii. 2009 shall be the year that defines this.

Fullfilled Prophecies

Wii
X360
PS3

The userbase for Wii is increasing so fast that a lot of smaller titles will sell over a million. And it will be an increasing flood of titles. I'd say that Wii takes the lead in million sellers (for current gen) before summer 2009 and hangs on to it.

X360 will have hardware sales close to the PS3 and sell quite a lot more software.

the wii of course

The 360 has the potential to add 15 or so million sellers these holydays.
I don't see the Wii adding that much so I actually expect the gap to increase...

The fact that the 360 and the PS3 get less titles actually play in their favor too as purchases are spread acccross fewer titles...

360 had 41 million sellers in 31 months.
Wii had 25 million sellers in 19 months.

Overall 360 has had 1.3225806451612903225806451612903 million sellers per month.

Overall Wii has had 1.3157894736842105263157894736842 million sellers per month.

This gives the 360 a microscopic lead.

However, this is because the 360 had a larger userbase for 21 of its months and a smaller userbase for the last 10 months.

The fact that they are both churning out the same number of million sellers per month on average at this point means 360's only advantage was its head start. The Wii is gobbling up software market share faster than all hell, and it will have way more million sellers by the end of this generation. It'll be like the DS or PS2.

Quoting this because I like the approach. Currently the 360 and Wii have both fallen in terms of how many million sellers they have per month, but that is because we are coming out of the summer months and dry season. Currently the numbers are 1.265 million sellers per month for the 360 (43/34), and 1.273 million sellers per month for the Wii (28/22). The PS3 currently has 0.727 million sellers per month (16/22), but it also suffers from a late European launch and a really rough first year. It will be interesting to revisit these numbers after the holidays.

I also like this aproach and your update to those original numbers.

This is a logical approach that shows buying trends which is a better metric than just "I think X console because I like the games more."

I'm not sure what lineup you're looking at. There's nearly that many already released games that could be added to the million-seller list these holidays or soon after.

I don't want to do list wars, but I could easily make a list of 50 titles to watch from now until the end of March for Wii. There are tons of games (10+) with strong legs, which could have strong holiday boosts. There are plenty of exclusives from proven brands (~10), and plenty of major multi-plats (10+) where the Wii version could reach 1M.

You can't just look for the super-duper big names, though. Just as examples, games like Game Party 2, High School Musical 3 and Sonic Unleashed, might not be things you would think of as "big name titles," but they could all sell 1M copies, and they represent key advantages for Wii.

While it has not removed the gap, it has certainly closed it. Since this thread has started the Wii has gained 3 more million sellers as opposed to the two the 360 has gained. In a longer term sense, the average number of million sellers per month has gone from favoring the 360 to favoring the Wii. Given it is still too early to assume these numbers are final, but it is ridiculous to claim the Wii hasn't gained ground.
