Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Miyamoto: "Ninten-does what Sega don't!"

He said "it looks like a Sega game" not "it sucks like a Sega game."

He's talking about style and presentation.

Screw him, what a freakin cocky a$$ dev, reminds me of that guy that said he had no face(tecmo ninja gaiden dev).

Well, Leo-J, Miyamoto isn't just some developer to be thrown in with the pool.

Also, for the last few years, Sega games have sucked, bad, while Nintendo, and particularly Miyamoto developed games are some of the best reviewed, selling, consistant, and high quality games released.

While I don't condone anyone burning anyone else, I do think that what he said was the complete truth, and you need to give Miyamoto the benefit of the doubt. Particularly with Japanese translations being wrong lately on several occasions.

Also, personal insults towards Itagaki are pretty insulting man. There's no need to make fun of anyone's physical appearance.

Still, I am one to talk. I also chastized Jaffe for doing something very similar, even after he apologized for it. I doubt Miyamoto will even find out there was a small outrage over this, and to be honest, Sega is probably just happy to have their companies name mentioned by Miyamoto, who is recognized as the greatest developer of all time by virtually everyone, and is the only game developer to transcend the gaming business and become famous and publically recognized outside the gaming industry as one of the worlds greatest and most influtential men on several occasions.

His achievements can be viewed below, if you wish to dispute me.

Miyamoto was the first person inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences' Hall of Fame in 1998, an award that outlines his lifetime achievement and dramatic effect on the video game industry. In March 2005, Miyamoto was among the first honorees in 2004 to receive a star on the Walk of Game: a section of San Francisco's Metreon Center that is modeled on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

As part of the French video game policy effort, on March 13, 2006 the French honored Miyamoto by inducting him as a Chevalier ("Knight") into the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, alongside game designers Michel Ancel and Frédérick Raynal.

The name of the main character of the infamous PC game Daikatana, Hiro Miyamoto, is an homage to Miyamoto.[6]

The rival character in the first generation of Pokémon games was named Shigeru. Likewise, the main character was named Satoshi, for the developer of the Pokémon series.

In Perfect Dark, enemy soldiers' faces are mapped from the game staff and from Nintendo employees. Notably, Shigeru Miyamoto's face is seen on the patrolling guard in the opening movie for the Pelagic II stage.

A hidden easter egg in Nintendogs reveals a character named Shiggy (Shigeru) & his Sheltie Pik (Pikku). In events, though (Such as ones at Nintendo World Store in New York), his name is Miyamoto with the Daschund Mario.

On November 28, 2006 Miyamoto was featured in TIME Asia's "60 Years of Asian Heroes" with Hayao Miyazaki, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Bruce Lee, and the Dalai Lama.[7]

At the Game Developers Choice Awards, on March 7, 2007, Shigeru Miyamoto received the Lifetime Achievement Award for a career that spans the creation of Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., and The Legend of Zelda. He was also given credit for the company's recent revolutionary systems such as the Nintendo DS and the Wii. He was the Keynote speaker at that conference, along with Eiji Aonuma and Satoru Iwata.[8]

Shigeru Miyamoto was chosen as one of the 100 TIME Magazine's 2007 Most Influential People of the Year. [9]. He has once again been nominated for the list in 2008, and topped this list.[10].

Shigeru Miyamoto appeared on a Mega64 video as himself, along with the two main stars who were dressed as Mario and Luigi.

A flattering Sunday New York Times profile appeared in May 2008 on Miyamoto. In it, he is called the "the world’s most famous and influential video-game designer."[11]

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I'm taking this with a grain of salt. Translation errors always happen....

You guys are taking it way too seriously. I'm sure he is joking.

Thats what they all say, I remember when David jaffe attacked miyamoto about his comments concerning twisted metal and the way he was attacked, when HE WAS SERIOUSLY JOKING.

Miyamoto is too cocky thats all.

But ATTACKING RATCHET AND CLANK, is wayyy too much.

He didn't attack Rachet and Clank. The R&C developers stupidly said they were flattered that Miyamoto based his spherical worlds in SMG on R&C.

Some interviewer asked Miyamoto about it, and he was like, "Rachet and who?" He'd never heard of them before. He'd didn't roast them, he just didn't care, lol.

Honestly its impossible to have a conversation with anything negative about nintendo, its automatically destroyed.

Well hating on Nintendo is like hating on the Beatles or David Bowie or Citizen Kane.  You just have to live with the fact that you're basically nuts.  Even if you don't love them, you have to respect them for revolutionizing their form of art and making it what it is today.

Nobody in Japan has heard of Ratchet & Clank.

Arrogant (pronounced ) is an adjective that may refer to having excessive pride in oneself. A person who is arrogant may exaggerate one's own worth or importance in an overbearing manner.

Arrogance is a bad word here.  Miyamoto has the two best-rated games of all time, and more in the top 10.  Can Sega really even compare to him, or Nintendo in the quality department.  It's not nice, but it's certainly not inaccurate.

That said, I agree with Rubang in that it was more related to style than quality.  However, even if it was talking about quality, what he's saying has a point.

Uh...that wasn't attacking. He really didn't know. Still, that R&C quote is epic. "Is that a PC game?" ROFL! Epic win.

That's not really epic, it just shows that he's completely ignorant of other developers in the industry.

Yeah but it's hilarious. I think Miyamoto keeping isolation from other gaming companies helps keep his ideas original. Miyamoto isn't your average developer. He's not a game industry fanboy. He's just a guy that develops games he comes up with. He doesn't need to play games based on Mario to make his next Mario game good, lol. In other words, it's an epic win because Insomniac tried to take credit for something in Mario, and Miyamoto didn't even know who they were. By inference, Insomniac might have thought a little too highly of their game. Without even trying, Miyamoto discredited their assertion, and made the game seem like it was below him to even have knowledge of, let alone play.

It certainly is an epic win, even if it does offend a little, lol. It's like accidently giving someone trying to take credit for your work the biggest burn ever recieved.

Saying, "Oh well Miyamoto's ignorant is all that shows" is basically sticking up for insomniac and lessening their shame. It's a harsh and funny roast, but Miyamoto did it on accident. It's not arrogant of him to do something on accident.

Also, let me point out that it is an incorrect assumption to assume that most game developers have played or even know about all the games in the industry. Obviously the larger ones don't really worry about it, lol. You think Kojima knows who developed Overlord offhand, or has downloaded the patch to get past the Brewery level?

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Oh, and for those who don't know, Miyamoto is well-known within Nintendo for being the opposite of arrogant. He's refused several promotions and still bikes to work. He doesn't play games because he doesn't even like them. He was hired as an artist, and that's why he's so good. He treats games the way all developers should: LIKE ART. He invented the 2-D platformer and reinvented it as the 3-D platformer.

If you've ever played a game that lets you jump, you owe Miyamoto your thanks.
