nice find! looks like I need to stock up on some SD cards if this turns out to be true.

I could be wrong here but I think the expression "Rock Archive" heavily implies that you will need to swap them back and forth onto the Wii's internal memory to play them. Either way the solution is sufficient for me.

To Each Man, Responsibility

Are we going to suggest that the photo channel caches every one of my 4000 1MB pictures to it's internal flash as well? And when I play my MP3's and watch these pictues I surely must be copying EVERY music file and picture to the Wii.....

No.

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

The MP3s are most likely streamed with a buffer in real-time just like the way it's done on a IPOD. The way GH would work is pretty much the same in my opinion. They stream the different tracks from the SD card in real-time.

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

Please cite proof and the I again will take my words. When I say proof I mean an article from a decent source that say it PLAYS directly from the SD card.

Well, I have a 1GB MJPEG file right here. Care to explain us how is the Wii able to play it, by first copying it to internal memory as you suggest?

Get this: you're wrong. You've been wrong all along.

Why provide proof when logically, it's already been proven? Besides, I don't see you providing neither a competent argument nor a viable source yourself. You're wrong. Get over it, unless you can come up with something to counter the argument other than consistently asking for more when you already have enough to erase any doubts you have about the topic itself.

Did you just pull that out of nowhere? What proof do you have of Excite Truck and Endless Ocean not allowing direct play from an SD card? Source?

If any you find information stating that the wii reads directly from the sd card when playing music then I take back my words but, I have tried and I have not found a site that says that it reads directly form the card instead of copyng to the wii first and then playing.

Lol, he/she wants you to prove that it is not direct play from SD card. You want him/her to prove it is not directly play from SD card again.

1. Where did you found that SSBB, Endless Ocean & Excite are not able to read files directly from SD card?

2. Vicarious Visions didn't mention they would use temporary cache either, so there is no proving or disproving anything.

So, here's my proof.

We can just say a single thing here...

PWNED!

There is *nothing* extraordinary about the Wii being able to READ DATA from a SD card. Its no different than reading from any other port.

However - I very much doubt the Wii can *execute* code directly from a SD card. It would need to be loaded into the main memory first (i.e. 24MB internal RAM).

No different from running any application - the Wii loads/decompresses the app from the 512MB Flash RAM into internal memory - then executes it.

...

I believe the challenge for WiiWare/VC from SD cards is this: When the Wii reboots, it scans the 512MB Flash for a "directory list" of applications installed. Extending this functionality to the SD card is actually non-trivial, and could add significant 'reboot' delays.

They may have to write a specific "SD card browser" channel, which runs as a little application of its own. There could be some other clever solutions.

Gesta Non Verba

Nocturnal is helping companies get cheaper game ratings in Australia:

Game Assessment website

Wii code: 2263 4706 2910 1099

To prove my first point in the op Listen to this week Ign voice chat for the wii that the music downloads for guitar hero are not just music but gameplay information like notes and beasts information. This means its sending game information from SD to the wii allowing to play the song not just loading music from the SD card . Since it game information it streaming and not just music this means that game information can be saved on Sd card and stream to wii to play games.

I retract my above statements about preloading BUT my main point in the op seems close to truth.
