Forums - Sony Discussion - BREAKiNG NEWS: PS3 XMB Hole found; Blu-ray Back-Ups Bootable!!!

considering how expensive bd burners are currently, I doubt this will make any difference. It would be foolhardy to invest in a BR burner simply for pirating games for the ps3, not knowing how long it would work, or how effectively.

Also I'm guessing you can't take your games online if they are pirated?

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

The cost per game for burning a Blu-Ray disk makes piracy impractical at the moment ...

In 12 months time you will be able to (probably) buy a Blu-Ray burner for $200 and discs for $2 or less which could make this a serious problem; pirated games with no hardware mod would be a serious problem.

can someone explain this to me.... wth did the original poster say?

It will only be a matter of time before they start forcing consoles to upgrade their firmware. Otherwise they'll start banning.

I hear Hitler got banned from Xbox live!!! LOL!

Basically the duder in the video managed to show that the PS3 would load (sorta) a burned BR game...though apparently its at an old firmware version and all it'll do is load it, you can't actually play.  Essentially it just means that the hackers of the world are hard at work on modding the PS3 to play pirated software, like they do for most hardware.

What is it about Sony's firmwares that make them so vulnerable to a simple software exploit? The PSP ... I can download any game I want and play it on a custom firmware. I can download PS1 games and play those. I can play NES, SNES, GBA, Genesis games if I want.

Odd. Someone needs to fire those software engineers who designed the PS3 OS and the PSP one, too.

The more features you add, the more complex the code becomes. With growing complexity comes more potential for oversights and openings. The 360 firmware was hacked a long time ago to trick the disc validation system. The GameCube's flaw first opened with Phantasy Star Online. The Wii is hardmodded, as is the DS, which just used to use a real game to trick the system into playing pirated games and homebrew.  The PS2 and Dreamcast were compromised by mere bootdisks.

But if they really crack the firmware, they can load directly from the hard disc. No blu-ray disc would be needed. Just like the UMDs were circumvented with memory sticks.

Hmmm, that would open interesting possibilities.  Though since the PS3 camp claims all 50GB of space is being used for the big games, it'd be a one or two game at a time deal eh?
