Forums - Gaming Discussion - Manhunt 2...a test?

companies don't release games on consoles as a "test" they carefully analyze what will be profitable and then choose which console to release said game on. R* is releasing manhunt 2 on the wii because they knew it would be controversial, not because they want to test what works...

I agree here as well, R* always likes to push boundaries, hell the 1st Manhunt was banned in like 60 odd countries, heh... I still think the title was already in production for the PS2 and with some work it was able to be upgraded and streamlined using the wii's h/w.

Yes, but it's a violent shooter and the same general market type. Markets aren't divided by rating

Did you play the 1st Manhunt? I don't think you should actually group these together. I don't remember sneaking up behind someone, getting them to their knees with a machete chop into his lungs, then proceding to "whack" off his head with a seemingly dull blade(took three chops) all while the guy is still wheezing and blood is being sprayed onto a snuff film style camera angle, then tucking the severed head into my belt to later be hurled at the enemy in order to terrify them in any FPS I've ever played, starting with Wolf3d.exe on up to F.E.A.R. Did I miss it? Yes, I'm sure some of the market is cross-over, but many players of a game like Red Steel would likely turned off by the beautifully gratuitous gore of Manhunt. I'll at least rent the PS2 version

Yeah, those games are nothing alike.   1st person sword fighting and shooting is a lot different than sneaking up on people in 3rd person.  It's also more like a survival horror...

You both completely misinterpreted the comparison.  I was saying it was a similar market to GTA, not to Manhunt 2.  Manhunt 2 is as niche as niche gets, and I doubt it will get very good sales anywhere.

Guys no. WTH? Noone follows gaming news lol. MH2 and Bigs I believe came as a direct result of Reggies personal talks with TT and R*. Before Wii launch Reggie was going about trying to make sure Nintendos Wii got a least a taste of the developers they hadnt had in the past 10 years. I cant believe noone remembers the jokes about Reggie "begging R*". Nintendo was aggressively seeking mature titles to supplement their software. MH and Bigs is what they are getting. No idea if they are moneyhatting but I appreciate them making a direct effort to get those type of titles on their console. It acknowledges they know that the problem exists. Even if there is a PS2 version as well, this is support. Where as last gen they got jack crap from Rockstar. Progress is progress. Hell I respect MS the same for the lengths they have gone to to fill their void of Japanese friendly games. Both Nintendo and MS are aggressively pursuing their weaknesses. And that just good for the gamers.

You beat me too it Xyrax.

Yup, This decision was more Nintendo's than rockstars. With one game, Nintendo can deal a good sized slap to it's "Kiddy image" by having the most violent and twisted game on it. It's the kind of negative publicity that you can't buy (actually you can, and I wouldn't be suprised if that's what Nintendo did).

So why not GTA? My guess it'd just be too much time, work and money to make a completely new Game, as GTA IV couldn't be pulled off on the Wii hardware. Doesn't mean we won't see future GTA titles, but they'd have to be different games to fit the Wii.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

So, who is actually going to buy this game? I don't think I could play this without feeling guilty in some way while doing it. I loved the game play in the Godfather, but this is a bit much... RE4 head chops were gross, but nothing like this. I hope there is a good horror flick in the theaters during the same week as the games release so that they can advertise it to fans of the genre. Then again, this game is going to get tons of free publicity as it stands... fans will find a way to buy the game...

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

Manhunt 2 will not "slap it's kiddy image." If Eternal Darkness, the various Resident Evils, and other multi-platform games didn't help the Gamecube, whose to say that Manhunt 2 will convince those few for the Wii?

Because the Manhunt series has such a dark reputation. Its the most twisted violent game series to have had a decent amount of publicity in recent years.

because the gamecube was the PS3 of it's generation... people weren't willing to cut it any slack. With wii, not only is it not purple, but it is also much more accepted and less discriminated against among hardcore gamers. It wouldn't have mattered if every game on the GC was an M game... as long as mario showed his face here and there people didn't care about the M games and slapped the "KIDDIEZ" sticker on the GC. With the Wii though nintendo has a clean slate, so to speak, and can sway gamers away from the "kiddy" stereotype with their "wii is for anyone and everyone" style of marketing and, of course, games like manhunt 2.

when the wii is the only next-gen system to have manhunt 2 that speaks volumes for how "un-kiddy" it really is. If anything nintendo will need to prove that the wii isn't a mini-game hive... hopefully with the games coming later this year it will shatter that preconcieved notion as well.

Dude, Manhunt and Red Steel aren't even in the same category. You might want to play both games before stating things as facts.

Just kiss the tip.
