Forums - Gaming Discussion - Do you base your game buying decision on reviews?

If so what sites do you generally use: IGN, Gamespot, Gameinformer, EGM, 1up.com or any others?

I'm kinda confused, since I hear that some reviewers out there just review a game high because of hype or because a developer paid them to score the game.

Who to believe??!?!

I don't want to buy a $60 and it turns out to be crappy.

I'm confused as hell now...I usually read reviews to distinguish between good and awful games. But now its getting harder to use them now.

I'll check IGN, then MetaCritic (Average of all sites, very accurate), the I'll ask VGC members if the game deserves the score... if so, then it's a buy!

Guitar Hero 3/ Smash Hits

I first trust my own tastes. No good review on the Earth will ever convince me to play Pro Evolution Soccer for instance, as I have no desire to play soccer games. So first my interests I keep in mind.

Secondly I use mainly IGN and EGM for quality review choices, with Metacritic as a guide to see where the average stands.

If there's a demo i'll ty to play it first as a test run.

That's it. If I still get a stinker based on that I just chalk it up to bad luck. The only game I bought recently I can't stand is Monster Madness, and that's because it was a $10 impulse buy at Target and I didn't check reviews in advance. I just remembered it was very similiar to Zombies Ate My Neighbors and made a bad decision to buy. Please no one buy this game.

Yes. I base all of my gaming purchases on reviews and price. I trust reviews from VGChartz the most as no other site comes close! I also like IGN, Amazon, Go Nintendo, Metacritic...

I go to reviews when there is a choice to make or when this game is on a new console I have to buy. I always use Metacritic.com, its got all the reviews around the world, so the biased opinion will be averaged out, and you get the best representation of a critical review. I also watch Gametrailers.com video reviews to look at gameplay, not the score, because this gives you a very good idea of what the game looks like. Its also extremely careful not to include spoilers unlike some reviews, and is very detailed. Its so detailed that sometimes the reviews are even too long!

IGN all the way... The last respectable online videogame review site.

Generally, I may disagree with a review, but by the time I'm done with the game, it is exactly what I've played.

Like their Assassin's Creed review... I disagreed, so I played and beat the game, then went and re-read the review, and was like "They are totally right".

So, IGN, FTW!!

If the reviews slams it, I would never buy it. If the reviews say it's great, I probably wouldn't buy it either.

Yes. Review scores mean everything, anyone who think they can do a better job than proffesional reviewers who get paid for reviewing, are nothing but stupid crybabies.

That is VGChartz LONGEST review. And it's NOT Cute Kitten DS

I usually know what games will interest me before they come out. I read EGM, Nintendo Power, and watch x-play. If a game I am interested in gets universally bad reviews then I won't get it or if a game that hadn't interested me before gets surprisingly good reviews then I will try it and possibly buy it.

Not really. It sometimes helps me whenever Im on the borderline of whether or not I get the game.
