I'm not saying that Grand Theft Auto 4 (or other big games) doesn't move hardware ... What I am saying is that there is an assumption that is made by many fanboys that after a big game is released suddenly the sales of the system's hardware will suddenly explode. Most people who buy a system for games end up buying it because of the games it already has available and the upcomming games that they will also want; this means that any boost due to Grand Theft Auto 4 has already been included in the sales for these platforms for months so you shouldn't expect this massive boost in sales following the release of a game ... |
That pretty much sums it up. I'm also in the camp of those who believe that individual games don't move nearly as much hardware as people think. The Grand Theft Auto boost to hardware was VERY significant: PS3 sales were up almost 100% for the week! But that's all it was, a one-time jump in sales with little lasting effect. Anyone who thought this game was going to "change the console wars" was deluding themselves.
Of course, this isn't going to stop Internet fans from whipping themselves into a frenzy over Metal Gear Solid next month, then seeming puzzled when nothing changes in the larger scope of things.
