Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft's new motion control device? If this makes it to the 360, WOW!!!

Wasn't there some patent floating around from Sony with something a little similar to that (though that was a pretty long time ago)?

Actually, they wanted to put smells into videogames.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... And this Nintendo DS. - The PS4, this Xbox 360, and the Gaming PC, and the PS3's, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

Described as a “computer pointing device (generally a mouse but alternatively a game controller or remote control device) that may be worn on the hand and operated without needing to contact a (mousing) surface,” this patent was filed back in 2006.

We were told that the motion sensing controller that Microsoft was researching had the functionality of both the Nintendo Wii Remote and the Nunchuk packed into a single device, with a shape that is neither that of a banana, nor a remote controller, but more like a “pistol grip.” On top, it is supposed to have an analog stick (that could be replaced by a trackball) surrounded by the four action buttons.

Starcraft's thoughts: This would be an AWESOME device. It appears to have been in development for some time, and looks very different to the sketches of the more recently rumoured device said to be coming to the Xbox 360 this year. IF they are different devices, then I expect this one could come packaged with the Xbox 3...........

It's a Wii remote ripoff. Stop trying to spin it. With the release of this abomination, Microsoft sacrafices the credibility and dignity is has as a console.

Credibility & dignity? Wow and here I thought consoles were about games, profit, etc. Oh thats right they are. The Wii remote is just another controller type for a console. So if MS releases a similiar motion based controller for the 360 seems to me it can do no harm.

The funny part is people like you come here & slam MS while spewing some bull shit when on the other hand you talk about the Wii being the console of the future. If you beileve that then you would clearly have seen this coming. No?

this has FAIL written all over it. The only way they can make this successful is to integrate the feature into ALL xbox games and put a "pistol grip" or whatever they are going to call it in ALL new xbox hardware sold.

If you wear 2 of them you could box, with just one you could mimic holding golf clubs, tennis rackets, steering wheels, swords, you could do kamehameha blasts hahaha scorpions grappling hook, you could really do a lot more with it then the wii as far as mimicking motions but then as far as button pressing goes it really fails. The thumb buttons/ analogue stick would need to be displaced from the sketched position further to the left (for right handed gamers)to put it into a position natural to where the analogue sticks are on consoles today. They would also have to make a left handed controller for people who play left handed or want to duel wield.

What would improve the device is if they had some sort of pressure sensitive things on the back strap that senses when the tendons in the back of your hand move with your fingers. That way it would sense if you were holding a gun and firing the trigger. But it still falls short on the button pressing as there’s no real room for proper accessible buttons if you include an analogue stick. Being able to pick up finger movement would then allow you to have 4 buttons and activate them like an invisible key board but then that would'nt even work for all games.

The beauty of the wii remote is that Nintendo made something that was easily accessible and usable across all gaming genres and age groups where as all this other motion sensing and interactive tech excludes certain genres or demographics. And yes wii remote button layouts do work for fighters their just very different to what where used to so its just easier to play on a gc remote.

Keep it real guys, dont hate mario, hate the player

It would seem to me that a lot of future games could be released to take advantage of either controller type. Not to mention tons of fun xbox arcade games.

Looks interesting, I think it has some issues but I would want to try it before condemning it or praising it either way. At the very least I'm glad they want to try something different, and hopefully they come up with something.

After doubting the Wii-Remote and being wrong, my mind has been opened. I hope Microsoft's device works well.

Im not saying this idea is bad, it just has to be done right. MS has to make it MANDATORY to devs to use the MC in a game, it can't be optional. Also, if its just a perephial like PS Eye, etc. it won't work. they have to be willing to put one of these in every box, which Im sure will be costly. I expect that this will either be a last ditch effort to save Japan, or they will save it for next-gen.
