Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Upgraded Switch model announced: Same price, battery life of 4.5 to 9 hours - Launches in August (Americas, Japan) and September (Others)

It does seem that this is the 'pro' model. No performance or graphic updates, just a significantly better battery. Good for new buyers. They should faze out the original model now.

Ah so it is a Switch Pro. I'm so happy that this Switch Pro is launching too, I kinda want more life out of my Switch when playing undocked, so the Switch Pro is excellent. 4.5 to 9 hours on this new Switch Pro is excellent. Can't wait for the Switch Pro to launch, here we go Switch Pro!

Switch Pro.

I think you forgot to say "Switch Pro." :P

God damn, that's a massive difference in battery life.

Thats what happends when you go from like 20nm -> 16nm FinFET.
Imagine if nintendo actually had these chips done for 7nm.

*edit:

Also they now use LPDDR4X DRAM , which is also helping abit with power consumption.

So soc got shrunk from 20nm->16nm, and ram use abit less power too.
Overall this leads to like a +80% better battery life.

And with that, I believe even more so that there will be no actual Switch Proanf we will likely see a BC Switch 2 in 2022.

Do you really believe that there will be a Switch successor in 2022 when Switch won't get its first price cut before fall 2020?

I actually think a Early Release Switch 2.... in say ~2021, makes sense.
So you have a device thats capable of running a few ports from the PS5/Xb2.

If its fully backwards compatabile with the current Switch, it shouldnt matter too much.

Maybe they even make games future compatabile, ei. Switch 2 games also run on the Switch 1.
The main differnce would be those games run higher resolutions on Switch 2, and lower ones on Switch 1.

Based on Nintendo's typical 5-6 year cycle, yes I really do.  The timing works out as well, landing only 2 years after the PS5 and Scarlet drop, right after their hype dies down a bit.

Or maybe it's the Switch Superlight. Smaller screen, caps all games at 480p and 20fps to save battery.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

just release switch 2 in holiday 2022, the third party multiplats will dry up afterb 2020 because they cant port ps5 level games but first party and third party exclusives will carry the console close to 100 million lifetime IMO

Eventually you will realize that Switch is in the same generation as the PS5 and Scarlett, because the attempts to put Switch in a different generation will only look more ridiculous as time goes on.

If the Switch's successor launches prior to July 2024 then the Switch will have spent the majority of it's life on the market with the PS4/XBO not the PS5/Scarlett. It will be remembered primarily as a contemporary of the ps4 and xbox one.

Personally I expect the Switch successor to launch March 2023, which would put it at 44 months alongside ps4/xbo and 28 months alongside PS5/Scarlett.

Have you convinced anyone yet that the Dreamcast is in the same generation as the Saturn? Or rather, do you believe that yourself at all?

Dreamcast was discontinued so the lifespan definition doesn't exactly work. There is no set definition for what a generation is that works in all circumstances. What we do know though:

Switch will spend most of it's life alongside the PS4/XBO not the PS5/Scarlett.
Switch released closer to PS4/XBO than PS5/Scarlett.
Switch will share more of it's library with PS4/XBO than PS5/Scarlett.

So why would you choose to group it with the PS5/Scarlett over the PS4/XBO? Because you think the generation it's put in is a statement on it's relevance or quality?

At the end of the day with no proper definition common consensus is all that matters, and the Switch will be labelled as an eighth generation console, just as it is on wikipedia already.

This isn't happening before 2023 imo. They're going for the longer lifespan this time around. It doesn't need the power boost some hopes for since it's been proven by sales that buyers aren't in for this aspect. (They're sure in for the games though !)

They will still support it with a few cross gen gamea from 1st party.  Many people will still want some multiplats on the go, which is why the upgrade would make sense due to next gen consoles.  As you said, people want the games.

The typical lifecycle of a successful Nintendo console has been six years. What has also been typical is that Nintendo had to support two consoles concurrently, but that not being the case anymore makes it much easier to prolong the lifecycle of Switch. And given how long it will take until Switch gets its first price cut, there is plenty of time left for multiple price cuts to extend the lifespan.

I have no idea why you would consider it a good idea to deliberately shorten a console's life and move on to a successor. Switch is much more successful than the 3DS, but for some reason you conclude a shorter lifespan.

The Switch is advertised as a home console with hybrid portable functionality.  The only home consoles from Nintendo to go 6 years was the NES, and the Wii.  Everything else followed a 5 year cycle (4.5 for WiiU).
