I'm going to use vgchartz data because I dont feel like digging up all the monthly NPD sales but it should still be pretty close considering this site adjusts to be in line with NPD.

63 months

360-25.6m

PS3-20.5m

Combined-46.1m

PS4-28.6m

XBO-24.6m

Combined-53.2m

23 months

3DS-7.9m

Wii U-2.9m

Combined-10.8m

NSW-10.8m

Oh I was comparing PS3/Xbox360/Wii to PS4/XBOXONE/Switch (Also this year is about when xbox 360 goes into crazy overdrive, if I recall correctly).

Here is Wii after 23 months, 12.7 million.

And yes and this point 360 had just begun to go into overdrive and 2011 would be its peak year doing 7.7m

Crazy how similar the top 10 is on PS4/XBO, they share 9 of the same titles, with 1 exclusive each.

Switch on the other hand is the exact opposite with 9 exclusives on the list.

This does kind of interest me, so i used your PS4 2015 vs NSW 2018 thread for this comparison.

PS4:

3rd Party SW charted: 23

Exclusives charted: 5

NSW:

3rd Party SW charted: 3

Exclusives charted: 11

The ratio isn't too dire either way.

But then we had last year, where the XBO's 2018 was running smack against the 360's 2010, the year the 360 S was released and helped propel the 360 to a significant peak:

Great charts and info as always and while I agree with pretty much everything you said, I dont understand why you always cite the S model for 360 explosive growth but leave out Kinect.

S model was definitely a contributing factor, as the chart shows, its June launch followed by Halo Reach in Sept gave it a huge boost over the Summer and would have given a nice holiday boost as well.

But the thing is without Kinect that holiday boost would not have been as significant, nor would the monthly sales in 2011. Kinect was a massive, casual phenomenon selling over 8 million units in holiday 2010 and 18 million by the end of 2011.

Without Kinect, the S model would have had a PS2 Slim or Xbox One X effect.

I still have my doubts that the Kinect provided anything other than a short-term boost the month of its release. The 360 was up more YoY in Nov. 2010 than in October, but by January that improvement to the YoY gains was gone:

I just don't see anything in the data to suggest that the Kinect had a massive long-term impact on sales.

Also, Reach appears to have had minimal impact on sales. Sept. 2010's weekly average was up only 8.6% from August, a rather modest increase.

Holiday 2010 massive boost and 2011 sales being up almost every month and peaking in year 6 is the work of something capturing a new audience, not a sleeker redesign. The fact that Kinect sold 18 million in just over a year and caused Microsoft to shift focus from the "hardcore" to "casuals" is pretty telling as well.

What's so unbelievable that a sleeker redesign didn't have a huge effect on sales? We saw the PS3 Slim produce considerable growth over a significant period of time:

The PS3 Slim also coincided with PS3 getting to a mass market price point.

The 360 was already at $300 as well.

Can you point to anything in the data that suggests that the Kinect was more responsible than the 360 S for sales levels from Nov. 2010 onward, or that it had any measurable impact at all past the 2010 holidays?

24 million Kinects sold in just over 2 years, reports in 2011 stating 2/3 of console sales were the Kinect bundle, it was aimed at a different audience than the existing 13-30 year old male demographic and Microsoft shifted their content and marketing from "hardcore" to "casual".

You're the only person I can think of who doesn't agree that Kinect was a massive system seller and  the primary driver of 360 sales from holiday 2010-2012.

I don't think Kinect was a massive system seller.  I agree with Shadow1980 that it had more to do with the new model and price cut.  Also getting Minecraft first didn't hurt either although that came a little later.

Kinect was a disappointment.  Although even Microsoft believed their own hype for a while which is why it was bundled with the XB1.  I think they've learned their lesson by now.

There wasnt a price cut with the S model though and Minecract didnt come to 360 until May 2012 so that doesnt explain 2011 sales at all.

Kinect craze had died down significantly by 2013/2014 but there is really no denying it was huge for the first 2 years.

They cut the price in 2009 and then upgraded all of the models to S in 2010.  It's the combination of the two.  The S Model was a good value: low price and higher quality.  That was what the market was looking for.  The redesign may have even helped shake the stigma of the RROD.

Kinect was never a craze.  Kinect was not the Wii.  Wii Sports was a craze.  Kinect?  nope.

That's called revisionist history, was it as big as Wii? No, but it was huge.
