Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Will the Switch ever get a Direct competitor?

In saying that... The Switch is also a home console... So it competes with the Xbox and Playstation, those are it's direct competitors.

Let's see how many Sony fans here would agree that Sony likely won't release a new portable because they don't think they can compete with Nintendo on it after Vita, versus how many Nintendo fans will admit Nintendo haven't been able to compete with Sony and MS on console market since N64? Lost twice, then on the last 3 gens releases consoles that go far to not directly compete with both?

I think it's a bit of a disservice claiming that just because you didn't have the most sales in a console generation that somehow it's a "failure" anyway.
The Playstation Portable for example might have only shifted 82~ million consoles verses Nintendo DS's 154~ million consoles.
But 82~ million is still a bloody good number of units to have shifted... It's just comparatively it doesn't seem as successful.

I think if a console has a good games library... Then from a consumers perspective, it doesn't really matter if it sold 5 million or 500 million hardware units, right?

The Nintendo 64 for instance might have failed relative to the Playstation 1 in terms of sales... But anyone who owned a Nintendo 64 likely has stupidly fond memories of it, especially once you start talking Goldeneye.

Well said, and I wholeheartedly agree.  The PSP was anything but a failure and had a lot to offer.  Even the VITA has a lot to offer if you like Japanese games, and the little support it got from Sony themselves still led to some solid games.  To me, it is a great device, but it was a sales failure.

This is similar to as you say the N64 and the WiiU.  The N64 was not a sales failure by any means, the PS1 just sold a lot more.  Some even argue that the GameCube was not a complete failure for Nintendo (debatable).  The WiiU however was.  Much like the VITA, it still had a lot to offer for those that liked what it did have.

Then we have the Wii, not my cup of tea.  I loved Skyward Sword, but other than that I was on the PS3 or PC.  To many, it was a failure or a "casual" console.  But in reality, it is all a matter of perspective.

Now enter the Switch.  Dedicated handhelds are a dying breed, as those types of games are shifting to mobile.  This however was where Nintendo was the most successful.  Their home console division was struggling, so they did what I feel was the smartest decision they made in a long time.  They created a home console hybrid and rejuvenated the idea of portable core gaming while strengthening their home console games.  Nintendo makes great games, and now they have a winning formula to keep them in direct competition with Sony and MS by playing on their strengths to compensate for their weaknesses.  They went against what many people thought was going to happen, and came  back in a way no one saw coming.

The constant jabs are really just due to the fanbases themselves, and that will never change.  Sony fans were constantly talked down to in the PS360 days by XBox fans and the Wii sold the most consoles that generation.  Now the tables have turned and Sony is back on top, and they feel the need to shout it from the mountains (I as a Sony fan, have done this myself).  This however, can easily rub people the wrong way.  Now Nintendo fans find themselves in a similar stance, but instead of straight up dominance the Switch can be considered successful alongside the PS4 at this point when aligning the sales data.  For some reason, this bothers Sony fans and they feel the need to attack or bait Nintendo fans as a result (not all mind you, but you know the ones).

As a fan of both Sony and Nintendo, I see both sides acting just as ridiculous as the other at times.  Before you know it, even the smallest remarks are taken the wrong way and these flame wars break out.  Misconceptions about how, "if a console does not sell the most, it failed" start to break out and everyone gets on edge.  Do they truly believe it?

No, most likely not as that would be ridiculous.  I dunno, I am just tired of all the stupid debates that steer everyone away from what it is all really about...the games.

Sorry for rambling, just felt like getting that off my chest.  I am off to play some RDR2 on my Pro before bed with my Switch ready to go with me to work with Ys VIII locked and loaded.

These things have always made me laugh with the price. $629 for the 4 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of storage model. Sorry, but 4 GB RAM won't play a lot of AAA games, so you're better off getting the $809 version. But that one still only comes with 128 GB of storage.  So unless you want to constantly delete, and redownload games to the system, you'll need to shell out extra for an M2 SSD. (And yes, I know Switch has pathetic storage too, but hey physical carts are the same price as digital games, so it's not as big of an issue.)

It looks like a cool system though. Definitely has an audience. Just an extremely niche one.

Yeah, because the customers who buy smartphone for only purpose: play all big AAA hardcore games on touchscreen. The end is near for Nintendo handheld/s

LOL, your thinking exactly matches the past when PUBG or Fortnite are now natively offered on smartphones ...

Anyone will be able to get the very same AAA console quality game experience with streaming technology on their smartphones without having to invest in a Switch ...

Those are big hardcore AAA games? Wow, didn't know that. Streaming technology? I want to play it anywhere and anytime, especially when i often travel with friends in summer by plane, use wifi streaming on there? Bring ps4/ps5 with hope for 2 charge sockets and then boom, you can play it on any plane, easy peasy, right?

LOL, WTH does 'hardcore' even mean ? Do you even know what 'AAA' stands for ? PUBG and Fortnite on mobile clearly are AAA because of their big budgets but it doesn't hurt that those games also have fairly high end graphics for mobile too just like the Switch ...

If you want to eagerly play during your flight ride then just buy some airplane wifi and be done with it. The fact is the Switch isn't going to be special anymore in that it was the only way to play console quality games on the go in the near future with cloud computing ...

First, not every place in the world have airplane wifi. Second, even with it how do you play the streaming on the plane? Bring a ps4 and a TV with you as well as hope for two charge sockets on plane? You bring your ps4/tv anywhere to play your system? WOW. Finally, yeah, people will only play PUBG and Fornite or any MMO games on them, farewell any big single player game like Uncharted or The Last of Us, who play them with touchscreen? Smartphone gamer only is more casual than gamer with dedicate portable so good luck selling any hardcore game to them lol

Selling less than your competitor certainly isn't failure by default (funny enough there is a thread with discussion on this merits going on). But looking at how N64, GC and arguably WiiU (some say Nintendo tried to get back competing with MS and Sony in this one) shows they had a hard time competing and this led to Wii and Switch conception. PSP done great and thus Sony put PSVita which failed to compete and thus I and many others find it hard that Sony will try a portable so soon.

So I'm not sure how you interpreted my post, because your reply although completely right and having merit doesn't seem to be replying to my point.

I will absolutely agree that Sony likely won't release a new portable because they don't think they can compete with Nintendo. Sony is kicking ass right now by focusing on the dedicated home console. There's no reason for them to go through that again. Just like by combining their handheld and home console there is no reason for Nintendo to make a dedicated home console. Sony and Nintendo are both putting money into what they are best at and are both doing extremely well because of it.

For both companies it's better that they both have their space where they profit most (for customer certainly most will say they would prefer more competition). Just looking at the revenue through the systems it seems Sony is faring much better focusing on PS4 than they were with PSP and PSVita, same for Nintendo when looking at most of their consoles versus HH and now Switch.

I was replying specifically to the: "versus how many Nintendo fans will admit Nintendo haven't been able to compete with Sony and MS on console market since N64? Lost twice, then on the last 3 gens releases consoles that go far to not directly compete with both?" part.

I don't see any consoles as a failure. But I digress. I wasn't necessarily agreeing or disagreeing with any of your points, just placing my own perspective upon it.

Sony have copied Nintendo in the past such as the PSMove and the PS1 Classic. I wouldn't be surprise if they do.

@Bold Uh, the point of game streaming is that you don't bring your system with you ? Cloud gaming is a reality so now we just need to make it personalized by letting home systems like home consoles becoming the cloud themselves ...

As for there being a market for single player games for mobile, I don't really care if there isn't. With personalized game streaming, I hope there will come a day where we won't be at the mercy of a portable device's capabilities and that there will be a walled garden between it and home systems so we can get rid of 'high-end' portable gaming when nearly ALL of it should belong on at least home consoles ...
