I've read or heard a lot of people talk about the high sales of Nintendo games and their main argument is the lack of competition from other games. 

First of all, Nintendo makes videogames, and if you want to play that games you have to purchase their systems. Other companies like Rockstar makes video games too. So, here we have two different companies that sell video games. I saw in gamestop they are selling RDR2, and Smash Bros Ultimate, I love them both, so I have to decide which one I´m going to buy. Competition is real.

"Nintendo Switch, has not every AAA from the industry". Yes, it hasn't. But, if I don't like super Smash Bros ultime, why are you going to buy it. When someone say, hey, Nintendo exclusives just sell because there are few third parties, he is calling other people they are stupid. Why am I going to buy something I don't like to? Nintendo games sell because they are incredible. 

By the other hand, switch is a hybrid system. Yes you can play with it like a handheld system. Do you remember PSvita? Sony said, they weren't going to support it more, because of game mobile phone industry. So, the reality is not that Nintendo has not competition. It has, and is even bigger than the other two hardware developers.

First party games have always sold well since the NES so the lack of competition argument is a load of bull, for reference third parties for decades have complained how hard it is to compete against the first party titles.

I agree, Nintendo has plenty of competition. In fact Nintendo's unconventional hardware has always been in part a direct result of that.

If Nintendo didn't have competition, they probably would never of had the ambition to offer something different to everyone else.

Agreed. Think about it this way, people like Nintendo games enough to buy a new system just to play them.

I believe when people say Nintendo games have less competition, they are speaking specifically when it comes to games on the Switch itself. To a certain extent, they are right. But they are also very wrong as it is not black and white like some would have you believe.

Many Switch owners own a Switch and a PS4 or X1. With that in mind, those other games are still there to tempt them into taking up their time regardless of the fact that they are not on Switch. I have a PS4 Pro and my summer was taken up by God of War, Resident Evil 7, Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Persona 5 this year. I even put some time into BO4 as well. Heck during those months, the only Switch games I played was Octopath Traveler and Bayonetta 2. It is for this reason that unless a Switch is someone's only console (which some would foolishly claim it can't be, but that is another topic), all competition is still present.

Some people cannot phathom that Nintendo just makes good games, and will go to great lengths to discredit those games. However, the facts and sales point to the contrary. I own Red Dead Redemption 2, but have yet to start it. Instead I have chosen to play Smash, Starlink Battle For Atlus, Wolfenstein 2, and Warframe instead as the portable nature of the Switch is more beneficial to me now than it was in the summer (which is why I and many others will opt for the Switch version of the multiplats it does get by default these days). I had plenty of chances to start Red Dead 2, but those other games already had me hooked and they themselves are great games too.  But the fact remains, that the temptation to start Red Dead 2 instead of playing those games exist and therefore the competition from that title is still there, regardless of the fact that it is not on Switch.

Another example would be how I had the chance to play Horizon and Persona 5 when they came out last year, as well as many other games that came to the PS4.  However instead I found myself playing only on my Switch from release till summer 2018.  Those games were still competing with Switch games in my household, but playing BotW, Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade 2, and Splatoon 2 were more important to me than playing anything on the PS4 at the time.  In no way did Nintendo games never have competition at any time in the equation.

So while there is a rich library of games on the Switch from both 3rd party and 1st party, more than some will admit, they play at the fact that some of the bigger budget games (which in many cases do not equal quality anyway, see Fallout 76 or ME Andromeda) do not come to Switch to create an illusion that there is no competition to Nintendo's games. It is one of the weaker arguments I have heard for certain and at this point it is comical really.

At the end of the day, Nintendo competes equally with the likes of MS's Xbox and Sony's Playstation. Why? Because they all at a base level compete for a consumers playtime.

As Reggie Fils-Aime said: "we compete for entertainment time". 

In the same way, there isn't any proper competition for games suitable for under 15s on Xbox and PS4. Only Nintendo seem to target "family friendly" in a satisfactory way. As always though: Nintendo have picked a market share that other companies are ignoring.

I saw the gameplay for Mortal Kombat 11, and I thought: "Hmm... maybe that's a bit much". So maybe just I'm getting old?

Exactly that. It all comes down to entertainment time of the consumer and that place under or beside the tv.

Wat?

I mean even Xenoblade 2, a 1st party game, is filled with adult humor and mature themes.  Sure many of Nintendo's games can be played by all ages (adults included), but that tired argument of your lost meaning a loooong time ago.  In fact, I would argue it only really pertains to the Wii era as Nintendo  allows all kinds of adult games on their consoles.
