I like Octopath's look too, but my point is, they are apples and oranges.  16 bit style applied to a 3D diorama vs 3D realistic or semi realistic games, how do we compare? If you put all three of those games up in a mall and asked randos which looks best, I am pretty sure the loser

is Octopath, but then again, maybe the retro look would get some votes. But again, my point is, in a world of Puyo Puyo Tetris, Splatoon, Final Fantasy XV, Octopath, Red Dead Redemption, Warioware, Breath of the Wild, Shovel Night, Destiny, Angry Birds, and No More Heroes, how do we decide ugliness?

Just like how we determine ugliness on anything else in life: through subjective opinion. That's what this thread is about, I think. Just because Octopath Traveler has a stylized look doesn't make it ugly. Although anyone is allowed to think it's ugly, of course.

Yep, that's right. What qualifies as ugly is up to the individual. For example, another one of mine that I just remembered:

Around the Network

@chrizum/curl-6 Ah, well in this case, folks, carry on! It turns out it is I who am the relic of a bygone era, where we could judge graphics quite relatively and conclude that "it looks like an N64 game". Carry on!

Are you referring to judging graphics purely on objective technological merits? Cos you can still answer based on that if you want.
