Forums - Sales Discussion - Japan sales (Week 30) Media Create/Famitsu/Dengeki - July 23-29, 2018

Everyone, please have a look at this. Media Create has just hit a 5-year low in software sales. Switch doesn't have a sustainable effect in reviving the JP market. Many people are either leaving console gaming or spending less because the current offer doesn't fit. Japan desperately needs a new portable Playstation.

In fact, Switch saved the japanese market. This graph only shows that people are more into digital than retail.

Nintendo is number 01 now, just accept and move on

Its a small decline, i would be willing to bet the growing digital ratio would offset that.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

The Switch is basically the only thing preventing a completely and total collapse of the Japanese console market, once the Switch surpasses the PS4 install base in Japan I am sure we gonna start seeing multiplats sell better on Switch in Japan.

A decline in software is expected no? At this point Japan only has 2 relevant systems going forward, instead of 2 or 3 systems and 2 handhelds selling software.

People buy more digital + and gaming on smartphone is huge, I am to lazy to look it up but it is a market that's still growing but just not (much) on consoles. I imagine some devs are not making games for the switch while they did for the DS/3DS.

I don't know if that answers your question, but I follow a news site called Hachima Kikô, and since that infamous interview of NISA president (in which he bashes Sony etc.), any NIS-related article gets tons of comments (hundreds). Many of them making fun of NISA and their deal with Nintendo. This week, the Disgaea bomb was very commented also, including people expecting NIS to go bust. Besides, Disgaea Refine has currently 2 stars on amazon JP. The rage is real.

Switch software is doing fine, it's always dominating the charts. However, seeing the top 10 being mostly Switch evergreens week after week makes me wonder sometimes what PS4 owners are playing.

Since this curve isn't including digital sales afaik, I'm pretty sure that the actual sales are above, or at least on par with the highest curve, meaning the one of 2014.

A slight decline is to be expected in the future however, but that's for a different reason: Japan's aging and declining population naturally also reduces the amount of gamers and the potential market.

Switch hardware sales staying steady at a baseline in the high 40 thousands. Splatoon 2 will hit 2.5 million at retail in Japan next week, also did Switch have two Mega Man skus?

The big releases in Japan this time last year are starting to take their toll, confident Switch will manage to make it out up year over year in time for it's big holiday line-up.

It will as long as it keeps this baseline. Only 2 weeks in the coming weeks where it did 87k and 69k

It's not Switch that is the culprit, but declining PlayStation sales and third parties who have yet to follow the market. If more software is supposed to be sold, then games need to be made for Japan's hottest hardware. I am pretty sure you know the release lists and the PS4 is getting notably more retail games than Switch.

This is not correct, because most multiplat sell better on PS4. So Switch being "hottest" is no help for 3rd parties.

Maybe MHW digital sales would make the curve match 2016 at least. Still, famitsu's monthly chart shows that digital purchase rate has stayed between 10-20% for a few years now. Digital is hardly the reason, the point is that PS4 alone can't do as well as PS4+peak Vita, as well as Switch is far from 3DS software sales.

Nintendo has always been n°1 in sales, what's new about that?

How is the combined hardware chart is going?
I would bet software is declining because hardware is too.
The switch and ps4 price point is not like 3ds and vita.
Maybe the market just need a sub 200$(equivalent in yens) system.

I would also put in the account the price of the games. If Japan follows the western pricing, the games are an average of 50% more expensive. A decline in sales should be expected, don't?
Otherwise, the revenue seems to be higher.

@Bold: Some do, others don't. Right now the facts that the Switch is very hot and portable while the PS4 having a bigger install base and often better graphics are canceling each other out, but I'm not so sure about that further down the line. The install base advantage is shrinking and only few Japanese multiplats have really visible differences in between Switch and PS4, which means it's swinging more in direction ofthe Switch in the future.

@Underlined: You talk as if it's the only game you could buy digitally. The other games maybe don't sell as much, but guess what: There's so many of them it more than makes up for the individual digital sales of the games. Pretty sure digital videogame sales are more than the MHW total sales in Japan.

@Italic: Since when???
