What are the commentators talking about?
"Sweden move on to their second quarter final since 1958"
"Sweden haven't won in the knockout stages of the World Cup since 1938"

Pretty sure there were quarter finals and a knockout stage in World Cup 94, where they finished 3rd.
Are they referring to something I'm overlooking?

Sweden went to the finals in 1958 where they lost to Brazil they were the hosts that year.

Nice victory Sweden!

It's really shocking to think about that either Russia, Croatia, Sweden, England or Colombia will be in the final in this World Cup. Except England none of them has ever won the World Cup, defnitely looking forward to that!

So this match that foul is a red yet Denmark got away with a yellow a few days ago?

This! Some consistency would be nice...

I'm sure people will be like "oh but they can't give a penalty + red card because new rules" but since the ref initially gave a penalty as well as the red card that clearly isn't the case...

Funny thing is it's always been a red card if you're the last man (doesn't matter is the Keeper is further back) back and stop a goal scoring opportunity so when Denmark got away with it the whole situation didn't even make any sense it was a clear red card situation.

Honestly this ref was harsh all game long

Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

That Danish player should have gotten a red, but now the referee can decide if they were trying to get the ball.

That was the most pointless penalty debate ever lol.

My main issue (and think he should be given a yellow for it) is how the fouled player went down... he literally waited until he was in the box to then fall over. Disgraceful.

Hmm, pie.

Yeah, but they also finished 3rd in 94, so this should be their third quarter final, rather than second.
And the comment that followed about not winning in the knockout stages since 38 seems to contradict the first comment, since it seems to ignore both 1958 and 1994.
Unless there were no knockout stages in 58 or 94. But I don't see how that would be the case in 58, and I know they had knockout stage matches in 94.

Sweden finished in the top 8 at the World Cup quite often: 1934, 1938, 1950, 1958, 1974, 1994, 2018

The format from the world cup was significantly different compared to now, 74 was like the old champion's league format with two group stages, 58 they had less teams so the was no second round it went straight to QF, 94 is really the only WC comparable to today's WC tournaments format.

This card begging now by the english

Where are the people claiming that overreactions “ruined” the game for them? Sweden’s faking penalties and all this drama and theatrics between British and Colombian players and I’m not seeing complaints.
