The PS4 is completely kicking the Switch's ass in Japan. That's new, what gives?

Those Monster Hunter PS4 numbers are incredible. The Japanese PS4 sales are almost equal to the ones in Europe. Europe!

This is only one week after MHW release.
These numbers bring VGC's 2018 totals to:
PS4 - 1.64m
Switch - 1.27m
XBO - 0.5m

There was a time when hardware updates were far behind so I'm not going to complain now that hardware is leading
Also software is only physical sales which aren't even half of the total figures so yeah I'm not too much into that chart anymore.
Great for ps4 and great for NS. I'm not sure if Xbox numbers are bad or they just look bad compared to the other 2

You think digital makes up more than 50% of sales? Dood... come on! Digital usually averages around 35% in the west and 15% in Japan. There are exceptions of course, but in the majority of cases physical definitely does make up more than half of total sales. |
Funny cause I've heard in several occasions that digital has taken over physical, but I don't know the exact figures though.

Digital trumps retail in the pc market, the console market is the other way around, but digital is gaining traction. Last I heard digital was between 30-35% of all software sales and that was only recently

You've probably heard things like this "Sharp 75.0% rise in Digital revenue to €670.3 million (representing 56.3% of total sales compared with 47.2% one year earlier)" https://globenewswire.com/news-release/2018/02/12/1339302/0/en/UBISOFT-REPORTS-THIRD-QUARTER-2017-18-SALES.html Yeah, digital makes up more of the revenue. But that includes digital only games, DLC, microtransactions etc, all things which bring in a lot of money and aren't even possible to buy physical and it's still only barely above 50% of total revenue. So clearly for actual game sales alone digital is still quite a bit below 50%. |
I don't know. The issue of digital vs physical is not very clear. All I can say is that digital is not counted in millions but in BILLIONS...
This video sheds some light and for those too lazy to watch the video, let me quote a relevant line at 4:39 that goes:
"6 years ago, the US market was 2 thirds physical, now it's 3 quarters digital" (that's 75% digital and 25% physical and this is not even now, this was almost a year ago which is when that video got posted)
