Forums - Sales Discussion - GTA IV now has around 3 million preorders, 360 > PS3

I wish GTA 4 was exclusive to the PS3. I wonder how much first day sales will be for both consoles.

@mrstickball: When Assassins' Creed was released X360:PS3 userbase ration in Others was close to 2 (excaly 1.91). Not it's 1.18. It is a huge difference and it will be even bigger when GTA4 is released. I'm not saying that PS3/X360 atach ratio will hold but it will be very hard for X360 version to repeate ratio for AC.

Most of the recent multiplatform games sold better on PS3 in Others. The list includes AC, PES 2008, Fifa 08, NFS: ProStreed, DMC4, WWE Smackdown, Kane & Lynych, Burnout Paradise while on X360 better sold only GH3 and CoD4 (I'm not taking in account recently released games like Army of Two as there were too few weeks avalibe but other than that I think I took all big multiplaform released recently)

So summing it up I think that PS3 version will win first week and the distance between two version will grow over time (life PS3 may sell 50% more than X360 version).

And out of that list only PES2008, FIFA08 and DMC4 ended up very slightly above 360 version for Worldwide. The rest was 360 > PS3 worldwide when you factor in NA. And you think that GTA4 will be 1.5:1 for PS3:360 because of this reasoning? OK I will remember that.

@solojohlo

Because this is news of the 360 doing better. When this is the case, all numbers are 100% fact.

Now, had it said that the PS3 version was ahead in preorders, then we'd have another GT5P situation

@solojohlo BMaker11

First of all the pre-order data is reported from VGChartz people.

Secondly, the absolute amount does not matter. The thing that everyone is debating here is how 360 and PS3 sales will differ. So if this was all retailer pre-orders, this does not change the 360:PS3 ratio.

Interesting. Good attach rate for PS3. This is important as it shows GTA 4 is an important game for Sony buyers. If it encourages PS2 GTA fans to upgrade then it could be very good for Sony. If these people were going to upgrade to a 360 i think they would have done it by now as it is cheaper in the UK. The fact that the PS3 is outselling the 360 with a higher price does suggest that PS3 is Europe's choice. (Europe only)

Ok. So the Xbox 360 can be known as "the shooter box", and cater to gamers, even in Europe, that prefer shooters, then when a multiplatform shooter-esque game comes out, that the 360's userbase is suddenly NOT going to buy the game?

Right now the X360 still leads in userbase in Europe, and still caters to the "hardcore western crowd" yet when a game comes out that caters to that audience, in spades, that it suddenly won't do very well?

Lets take a history lesson of shooters in Europe, shall we?

 NamePlaystation 3 Xbox 360
 Rainbow Six Vegas 2 141,289 295,015
 Condemned 2 26,244 34,959
 Dark Sector 24,739 29,483
 Call of Duty 4 1,351,272 1,550,000
 Army of Two 172,309 186,717
 Kane & Lynch 330,000 310,000

 Totals: 1,848,805 2,066,691

I'll gladly give you that PES, FIFA, and NFS: PS sold better on the Playstation 3, but may I ask: What kind of gamer is going to buy GTAIV? Racer guy? Soccer fan? RPG Gamer? Shoot-em-up Gamer? Chances are, the last one will buy the most. Not that the others won't buy, but I still think GTAIV, although will break boundaries with the market it sells to, does still favor a competitive race between the PS3 and the 360. I see sales going in the 360's favor in the first 1-3 weeks, then shifting to the PS3, eventually allowing the PS3 to overtake the 360's LTD European sales in a few months.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

As much as various fans want to justify, and make up fanciful ideas that the PS3 version will outsell the X360 version, it won't.

Will it eventually be close? Yes. But I just don't see *how* it's going to happen.

US: Clearly, the X360 version is going to sell better. Will the PS3 have a better attach ratio? Sure, but so did Call of Duty 4. COD4 on the PS3 had a better attach ratio, but did it matter?

Sales prediction: 7,000,000 Xbox 360:5,250,000 PS3

Europe: Everyone believes the PS3 version will sell leaps and bounds better, but how often is that happening in Europe, for major shooter-type games right now? Last I checked, the closest comparible, Assassin's Creed has sold about 1.1:1.0 in Europe, and I tend to think that GTAIV might fare a little better on the 360 side of things ala COD4, which sold about 1.15:1.0 in Europe, in favor of the 360. The 360 version will win the first month or two, but I do agree the PS3 version will eventually lead, due to sales momentum of their system.

Sales prediction: 3,450,000 Xbox 360: 4,000,000 PS3

Japan: The only real place the PS3 version will outsell the X360 version by leaps and bounds, if the X360 version even gets ported. I don't think it will. But it might.

Sales prediction: 60,000 Xbox 360: 250,000 PS3

LTD Sales Prediction, Worldwide: 10,760,000 Xbox 360:9,500,000 PS3
LTD Total Sales Worldwide: 20,260,000 Units. Not including PC sales (2.5m+ Worldwide)

Holy crap stickball what are you thinking?

That's ridiculous. Not the percentages, but a more realistic number is 5.5 million for 360 and 4.5 million for PS3. Lifetime worldwide. Seriously I can't believe your prediction. 15 million is overly hopeful, 20 million is just insane.

@EaglesEye379: Maybe I should stated it clearer but my whole post was for Others and so was the last statement.

@mrstickball: I don't really get where you've got the idea to compare GTA4 to shooters. As far as I know it's not one.
When I made my list I tried to be as honest as I can. I took biggest games released in last couple of months only excluded those that have very few weeks to sell (and thus their PS3/X360 ratio can change more than for older games, for example I think that AoT will end up selling more units on PS3 eventually). But I can agree on Vegas 2 becouse PS3 version won't catch X360 counterpart.
You on the other hand chose 4 recently released games (for 3 of them PS3 may wind up selling better) with 2 having meaningless (very low) sales.

I don't agree with your last thought. What I wanted to show is that generally PS3 games sells better with exception for only shooters and Guitar Hero 3. I could also ask you if GH fans will go and buy GTA4? Or maybe PS3 action-games fans (DMC4, AC) will buy more? There is quite a lot driving in GTA so I think that racing fans should actually hop on board too. RPG fans? Are there than many of them among Europe PS3 owners? This of course is matter of opinions. You can't really prove me that shooters-oriented userbase will be more fit for GTA and I can't prove you that racing-oriented userbase will be better (actually I'm even not saying that but neither I am convinced by your arguments).

Sure the 360 has an install base advantage for North America, but IMO more Playstation supporters are likely to buy this game. The current 360 install base seems to be mostly former XBox owners, due to nearly all popular XBox games having received sequels on the 360 and premature demise of the original XBox nearly 3 years ago.

Most PS2 gamers still haven't upgraded towards the PS3, many waiting for the big sequels announced for release this year and the years ahead. I think GTA IV will have long legs on the PS3, with PS2 gamers upgrading towards a PS3.

And most probably won't.  The vast majority of those 100+ million were casuals.  I think the hardcore fanbase, for the most part, has already upgraded, and are the people who can't stop raving about upcoming Ps3 releases.  Most people (even PS2) owners have far less Sony loyalty than you do, and will include other factors in their decision.  Price is a big one, and even other games as you mentioned.  However, you forget that the 360 also has its fair share of quality titles to be released this year, plus an immense library of quality games people can play now.

Both consoles will see a hardware boost, and the PS3's may even be larger, but it won't be nearly as big of a difference as you'd like to believe.

Naz GTA:SA has sold over 21.5milllion units since launch to retail.  The game sold 1.5mil copies over the last 8months alone according to sales listed on wiki having links back to Take-two reports.
