So is anyone else concerned for the Switch right about now? I attributed to drop in positions in the charts to the system being sold out, but now the grey one has been back in stock and its standing is not really improving. Moreover, the top selling Switch SKU is far below both the top selling PS4 SKU and Xbox SKU at GameStop (https://www.gamestop.com/browse?nav=2b84,28-xu0,134f). At this point I am not so sure the Switch could pull off an NPD win for January (and more importantly, I do wonder about its overall momentum).

You worry too much

The gray system is not as popular as the Neon one, so many wait for the latter to come back. In the meanwhile the gray one is slowly rising in the charts again.

I'd acually be more concerned over the PS4. Monster Hunter World and Dragonball Figher Z are about to be released and it's still trailing behind both Switch models? Shouldn't it be much higher with such anticipated releases?

ps4 is at 76 million shipped, its been selling great for years now, nothing to worry about. switch on the other hand is a very unknown, it could easily lose momentum like 3ds.

Or WiiU, but how likely does that seem, especially with its US/JPN numbers?

Unless Nintendo is planning to launch and support a new system alongside it, Switch is guaranteed to sell at least 90 million lifetime. The thing is selling like crazy without assimilating the younger handheld userbase. 2018 may or may not be its weakest year, but we're not even close to seeing the Switch at its full potential. Mark my words, 2019 is going to make PS2's peek year look puny.

On the downside, PS5 may cause Switch's western third party support to plummet before it's fully realized lol. The interesting bit though is the Japanese third party support.. It took them a while to move on from PS3 to PS4. This does make me wonder if they'll ever make the jump from Switch/PS4 to PS5.

thanks for the laugh.

I don't get these guaranteed 90-150m for Switch comments. I love mine, but looking around I see a different picture. Maybe it will, but it's oh so early. Also next gen is likely 2 years off, which will see people buying those. Will Switch follow and give a new more powerful upgrade, or will it release a New system. So firstly I question it having the longevity to sell those numbers.

Then I look at the people in general buying Switch. Looking around the communities I belong to, a huge chunk of the core gamers and fans already have one. There might be people not on board yet, but I'm not convinced this is a huge growth area. There won't be huge growth into the fan base that mainly plays Cod, Fifa and GTA.

Lots of hipsters seem to have jumped on board too. Alongside trend following mums who owned a Wii, and see it as a safe environment. It is nice to see them come back from being lost to tablets and phone games. I think it is also this section which is distorting online versus store sales. I look at this section as the most fickle too. They could grow and explode, or move on to the next hot thing. I think I need another year to decide here.

Then onto portable gamers. This is another area that needs more watching before flippant guarantees. I didn't know many portable only people pre Switch in honesty. I'm surprised how many people only play portable and have mostly never owned mainstream consoles. To an extent I Don't feel qualified to judge it's growth.

I just don't see that level. I can see 15-20m this year and next happily. Then I can't see anything but decline. I can easily see it topping out below 80m. That's all before I See how the games shape up. If the gaming content was too front loaded into last year, I might revise that 80m estimate down too. It is just so soon to be giving a current gen gold medal to a console that has sold around 15m.

What I find funny is lots of people thought the Switch would fail. Not even 1 year in the market people are now predicting as high as 3DS - PS2 sales.

If anything is holding it back, it would be the stock availability. Switch could sell 100k every week in Japan right now and that is without Animal Crossing and Pokemon.

How and when did the 3DS "easily lose momentum"?
