Project Octopath Traveler is an amazing traditional RPG by Square.

It does look nice, but don't expect it to be the norm anymore.

Well, I know you're looking for good Switch titles, maybe that'll interest you

Games just cost too much money t9 make anymore so everyones output is down. Welcome to the HD era. Just wait till 4k becomes standard, games will take a decade to make if not two decades lol

I know ppl disagree with me a lot here, but I doubt most will this time. After being disappointed with FFXIII and XV, I have not been pleased with Square. FF7 Remake sounds scary: Action combat. Episodic. No news in a long time. Development troubles a few months back. Nothing at TGS. Kingdom Hearts 3 taking 200 years. They keep announcing game after game but put out few, dividing their resources so that games will take forever to complete. And now this crap!

Besides Dragon Quest XI, There is nothing coming from Square that excites me now. Everything else depresses me. I remember when Square was great. In the 90s to early 2000s they were fantastic! FFIV, FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, Parasite Eve, Einhander, Chrono Cross, Ehrgeiz, FF Origins, FF Tactics, FFX, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, Crisis Core, Dissidia 1 and 2, and even FFXII was a great game, even though it strayed too much from previous FF games. Square was king of RPGs. Now they put out embarrassing mobile games and are heading to multiplayer crap that they aren't known for. Games as a service? That's what I expect from EA, not Square.

Square is not the company that they were. True FF is all but dead. The deep single player RPGs that play like a story book mixed with a fine game of chess are being watered down to social action based stuff. I don't want it Square. You won't receive a penny from me

*me: I fully agree with bolded and underlined.

This is legit depressing sh*t!

Multi-player focused + games as a service! from Square?  ; _ ;

WHY! why be like everyone else, when you stand out and shine like a bright star, doing the exact oppersite?

This sounds like a bad idea if ever there was one.

They are known for their RPGs.... how does that work multiplayer focused? best case I think off is MMORPGs... but unless theyre planning on stopping development on FF14 and doing a new mmo, whats the news?

The FF7 remake definitely confuses me, everyone thinks the game is a classic, why does it need to be anything more than HD graphics and fresh audio recordings?

I agree with others pointing to Project Octopath and I think the DQ Builders games look interesting, but I wouldn't blame anyone for feeling a little underwhelmed with Square lately.

Except for a few rare exceptions (FFXV ) I can't really see that ever being the case. If games did require a lot more work they'd just hire more staff to get it done quicker. 1000 staff for 4 years is cheaper than 500 staff for 10 years after all, assuming the average salary of the larger group isn't too much higher of course (tbh it would probably be lower due to increased outsourcing to cheaper labour markets).

Yeah true but imagine our cost 🤤

Square to focus on multiplayer over single and games as a service.

The topic title is a lie.
They did not say that they would focus on multiplayer OVER single player.
I know you just copied it from the article, but they are mistaken.

"Gone are the days in which single-player games were of primary status and multiplayer games secondary. Lately, multiplayer games have taken the lead, and it is standard for games to be designed for long-term play."

This is referencing the current state of gaming. That multiplayer games are more common than single player.

"We will also endeavor to develop games designed not to be played once after launch but that customers can enjoy more and play longer."

And this is what they said they would do. Endevor to develop such games. Nowhere does it mention that they will focus more on them than single player games.
You should change your topic title before you confuse more people.

Hey man, people don't read links. Square is far too easy a target for you to expect that.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

Things change
Games music movies tv shows etc all changed since the 90's
Genres shift
Only Nintendo still makes the same stuff basically

''Hadouken!''

At least the Enix side remains true to its roots. Go Dragon Quest!

But they didn't say that at all. Unless I'm a awfully bad reader XD.

Still, Square Enix is shitting on the FF franchise since X (XV is horrid) and an action-oriented FFVII makes me puke (just my opinion). But Octopath Traveller looks neat. It's something I guess.

I think a lot will depend on sales and ratings. Square Enix is not stupid (I mean, not as stupid as some other companies) so they will keep focussing on games that make the most profit.

Yeah, the same thing was said about Bravely Defualt.  It sold well and now we're back at Square being stupid.

To anyone talking about how much money games cost to make - these companies make their money back without cynically nickel and diming consumers.  The problem is Square-Enix.  They are the perfect blend of greedy slimeballs(Final Fantasy All the Bravest, way overpriced mobile ports of decade old games) and incompetent business people.  The company HEMORRHAGES money on nearly every project they touch.

So none of this "blame HD" bollocks, if companies didn't make the money back they wouldn't be companies anymore - period.  Sqaure and often times Capcom are just fucking incompetent.
