What makes HW1 better than HW2? I never played the first one but I'm thinking about picking up the definitive edition. HW2 does fit your description of the first though.

Halo Wars 2's story pacing was terrible.
It was obvious in the way it held the players hand all through the campaign, then once things started getting interesting, it came to an adbrupt end.
There just wasn't enough variety.

Plus the Characters themselves looked and sounded different from the Original Halo Wars, after you have sunk a few hundred hours into the first game it never felt right to have Cutter look and sound so different. Haha

The Multiplayer population is also dead in Oceania, so outside of the first couple of days after release I wasn't able to get a Multiplayer match, so that is a big mark against it. (But also not entirely Microsoft's fault.)
Plus the only real interesting inclusion in the Multiplayer was Blitz mode which only had one entire map on release (Not sure if they have added more, haven't cared to keep up with that games patches or DLC) not exactly going to hold my attention for long.

Microsoft really should not have closed down Ensemble Studio's, they were one of the best RTS developers of all time. And with Age of Empires 2 HD bringing that franchise back to life. Well. Big mistake in my honest opinion.

I'm not sure what they were thinking with that move. Better yet they probably weren't thinking at all. I haven't yet played HW2 as I've been playing HW:DE just as a refresher. Hopefully I like the 2nd as much as the first especially since they have been releasing story DLC along with multiplayer.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

Probably Lord of the Rings 2, on 360 can't actually remember it's name. They weren't that rare back in ps1/64 days. On PC it's easily Company of heroes, still play it online 11 years later

You're talking about Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth 2. Shame the consoles never received the PC expansions. That had to be my most played RTS ever. Mainly because I also like the lore of LOTR. If you combine C&C 3 with C&C3: Kane's Wrath maybe that would come close.

That's the one,  I had that game like 10 years ago.

I am not saying that Halo Wars 2 is a bad game... As to be fair... Ensemble did set the bar high with Halo Wars 1, so it was always going to be tough to beat anyway. And if you love Halo Wars 1, you will probably enjoy Halo Wars 2.

The only Criticism of Halo Wars 1 I can give was the lack of 3v3 maps and Microsoft not giving it the long term support that it deserved.
I am actually tempted to buy Halo Wars 1 for a third time and get it on Steam actually, just not sure if the Multiplayer Population is alive and kicking or not.
