The leaps in specs are slowing down in the console arena. The 8th gen consoles were a big upgrade but that was after about 8 years and no mid gen upgrade. Again, keep your expectations low for 9th gen specs if the X1X is sold at a loss at $499.

Still doesn't change the fact that these mid-gen upgrades are a very small upgrade overall compared to the jump from the 360/PS3 to base PS4/XBO. They're mostly a GPU bump for better resolutions and/or framerates.

The handheld console market is just different and I will continue to ignore it. Its mostly been cheap junk spec wise, while Switch is somewhat cutting edge compared to 240p 3DS.

Special pleading.

You can't necessarily look to history when things are changing and consoles are basically PCs now.

More special pleading.

Even the 7th gen was historically unusal given how long it was, sales were strong throughout the gen,

Sales started off slower and took longer to reach peak sales. Higher launch prices combined with longer gaps in price cuts and proportionally smaller price cuts compared to historical norms is the reason why.

and they're still active platforms. Many 7th gen games still have people playing online.

Relevance? And in any case, people were still playing Halo 2 on the OXbox until MS shut down XBL support for the system. People were still buying and playing PS2 games well after the 360 & PS3 launched. People still play vintage consoles to this day. Not only was your comment irrelevant, it doesn't tell us anything we already knew. People still play older games on older systems. Who'd have thunk it?

The X1X is a much more significant upgrade over the Pro. The GPU is getting the most attention, but here is also much more RAM for games, and a custom CPU that should be more efficient. That will go a long way if the plan is to keep X1X around in the 9th gen.

50% more RAM and 43% more GPU flops than the Pro is not proportionally significant. You're overstating the power of the X1X.

The X1X's GPU may actually be comparable to the last gen leap. RAM and CPU are not.

Good, any claims of pleading I can ignore.

Yep, 7th gen broke some historical trends and remained relevant longer. Its almost like things are changing.

If developers want to put 9th gen content on X1X, that extra power youre downplaying will be useful. Its funny how much youre understating. Anyhow, you seem to be a bored contrarian, I'm done talking.

Again, X1/X1X primarily needs to maintain current sales.

No, that's not enough at all. ATM PS4 worldwide has a 3:1 even almost 5:1 sales ratio lately, compared to X1. They surely need to step up their game and that doesn't mean just selling another XBox to their hardcore fans. They need to aquire new buyers in order to stay relevant which is going to be quite a task looking at a 150+ price difference and a huge advantage concerning exclusive games the PS4(P) will have.

Imho they are a little bit too early...Sony imho played it wise to go the cheap route as not many people do have a 4K TV yet and a 350.- cheaper console by the same brand will play the same games.

You have the impression success of a platform is based on sales ratio, thats wrong.

X1 already has a viable userbase which is why is keeps getting notable support. So if it can maintain its current sales, then it will continue to be viable and software sales will continue to grow.

Let me put it this way, Wii U and Vita were failures because the userbases wasnt viable. Not because their sales ratio was lower than competition. The PSP was a great success even with much less sales than DS.

If X1X is gonna be pushed as a cheap 9th gen option down the road, then $499 right now was a good decision. Its also giving MS an edge on having the best ports. Hence, X1X suddenly gets praised for best console graphics and performance.

Personally, I feel PS4 Pro is underpowered, the power increase wasnt significant enough. MS made their premium option more appealing albeit at a higher price.

And GPUs aren't the only things that matter. The GPU boost is going entirely to higher resolutions/framerates.

You do know what the special pleading fallacy is, right? And that you're guilty of it?

Yep, 7th gen broke some historical trends and remained relevant longer. Its almost like things are changing.

Molehill mountaineering. Yes, last gen was longer, but that's not a portent of some massive paradigm shift looming in the near future.

If developers want to put 9th gen content on X1X, that extra power youre downplaying will be useful. Its funny how much youre understating.

I'm understating nothing. The X1X will in just a few years run into the reality that is the PS5. As with the last several generations, current-gen systems (including the X1X) will continue getting some support for a year or two before every third-party moves on to Gen 9 hardware. We're dealing with simple facts of the matter of the console market.

Anyhow, you seem to be a bored contrarian, I'm done talking.

You've failed to make a case for your claims. You've failed to provide any data justifying the viability of some new paradigm. You've blatantly ignored historical data and tried to exempt things from the discussion because you don't like what the data implies. There's nothing "contrarian" about challenging claims that the XBO can match the 360, or that continued incremental upgrades to existing platforms will replace standard generational leaps for the Xbox brand, or any other claim you've made. Honestly, it's like talking to a brick wall at this point. If you can't even accept basic known knowns about sales data and how the console market works, this discussion is fruitless. Until you can accept those basic facts, we're done here.

GPU power and RAM can also be used for improved graphics or to better handle technically advanced titles. I'm sure X1X will have great looking 1080p/30 fps titles as well. Hence, those improved specs can help X1X run 9th gen content well.

I will ignore the rest of your comment. Its too fruitless.
