Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Splatoon 2 Review Thread! MC: 84

Lower than I expected but still great score nonetheless. Was expecting it to review much better after the positive word of mouth of Splatoon 1. Sometimes sequels to initially misunderstood games like these review much better. (Next time hopefully they add a full campaign mode).

Between this, Overwatch and Titanfall 2, I'll be set for awhile with shooters.

Only bad thing is by the time I get a Switch Nintendo will probably have started charging for online.

MK8 has an 88 meta, higher than Splatoon 2, despite having less new. MK8D doesn't have much new either, it just brings the game back up to the series standard of actually having a battle mode.

But vanilla MK8 also didn't have the DLC before. Deluxe not only has the Battle mode but all the DLC and new characters not from the DLC (King Boo, Bowser Jr., and the Inklings). I mean I get the discrepancy between the two but the latter ultimately has the bigger package along with battle mode.

I don't think you get what I'm saying though, as I never said MK8D wasn't a bigger package than MK8. Also yes MK8 most certainly had the DLC tracks already even if not part of the main package. Just because they're included in MK8D doesn't suddenly make them new.

The same way MK8 gets a higher score despite having even less new over it's predecessors. It's best not to think about it.

Yeah.

At this point I thought everyone would understand critic scores are always biased by franchise. Most franchises just have a base score critics give it, and it doesn't budge much regardless of how much a game might have gotten better or worse when comparing to its predecessors. I know back on the Wii U days I'd have a hard time trying to say MK8 was better than Splatoon, but today I couldn't possibly bring myself to say that about MK8D over Splatoon 2 - it's just what the critics are like. Mario Kart is a 9 out of 10 franchise, Splatoon is a 8 out of 10 franchise, and so on. It's why franchises like Zelda or GTA for example still have crazy high scores even when people don't like the games (Skyward Sword and GTA IV, for example).

That is to say, there is a very strong bias that runs largely based on reputation. I'm pretty sure most of the complaints critics had with ARMS and Splatoon 1/2 were related to a possible lack of content, but when it's Mario Kart they just don't care. Granted I don't think MK8D lacks content, but it doesn't have too much more to offer either.

lol, we just had this conversation. But your arguments don't hold up well.  Mario kart 8 was easily the best mario kart in years, so it getting an 89 made sense. Splatoon was very bare bones when it came out, and while I found it to be very enjoyable, not everyone did.  I'd say an 81 was fair.  Lol, skyward sword.  Skyward sword was mechanically the best zelda, and it easily the best motion control game at the time.  This was also the time that getting a mid 90's score was rather easy, so Zelda getting a 93 made sense.  And GTA V sold 10's of millions, bad games don't sell that much lol.  You have to realize that it's not because of the franchise, but because of the developers that games are getting these scores. Naughty dog learned a lot from the first uncharted and since then has consistenly put out phenomal games.

It just happens that many of the franchises are made by the same devs.

I'm just saying that when you mentioned MK8's score of 88, it didn't have the DLC at the time. The critics scored it as the vanilla game. I'm not saying they were new in Deluxe, but once added in along with new battle mode and more new characters, it presented a more complete and bigger package when Deluxe released.

84% metacritic is pretty high. Although I don't get how single-player only games with short campaigns like Ratchet & Clank get similar scores.

MK8 has the word Mario in it, so it get's rated higher than it should.

It doesn't apply since not everything with Mario in it are rated highly. But when a Mario game does get a really good score, it usually deserves it. Unless you really didn't care much for 64, Galaxy, 3D World, NSMB, Mario Kart, Smash Bros., etc.

TBH, I was amazed that Splatoon 1 got an intial 81 Meta score on release. It was so bare bones compared to what eventually would come out with updates to the point where I would say a 75 seemed reasonable.

That being said, with Salmon Run, more online features, all the weapons from the first game and more, and better local play (not couch but with other systems), I expected it to be bare minimum 85. 84 to me seems low if we're basing it off of the first one.

Seriously? 10 points for nostalgia? Are we still beating that dead horse? Elaborate then, why would the BOTW be in 80s and please, share with us, what titles, deserve that 90+ scoring in your opinion.

I just find it awfully suspicious that it's EXTREMELY rare that a non Zelda/Mario/Metroid Nintendo game ever gets a 90+ score. There's obviously some soft spots for those couple franchises and barring them reviews are able to see nintendo games for how good they actually are rather than how good the times they had with them were.

GTA, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Uncharted, among others have had multiple games with 90+ scores. This is not just Mario/Zelda/Metroid. If you think Nintendo games aren't as good as others think then more power to you.

I can't believe some people are actually suggesting a 84 is a low score
