Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo considering more Wii U games for Switch, against straight ports, approach to IPs

Nintendo should port every WIi U game to Switch at this point. For a system that sold so poorly, it's a no brainer to make the games available to a larger audience.

Its not free to port those games.

If they only sold a few hundred thousand copies on an 11MM user base... what is going to make those same few hundred thouse buy it again (assuming most WiiU owners buy a Switch) and strive the other new users to buy what will be perceived as an "old game"?

That is where his mental model of adding more to the game makes sense. There has to be something about the game for it to make sense to put dev work back into it.

Perfect example failure is going to be LEGO City Undercover. Why would anyone rebuy this for $60? What is making it new and interesting to people now if they didn't already want it on WiiU (or the other consoles it was ported to)?

Their mental model on this is right. Porting an old game is not valuable unless you are adding something to it. Only exception would be VC type games as that value is being able to play it on new hardware decades later.

Arlo made a good video about how the Switch being a handheld gives ports/remasters extra value.

I agree with him. The portability is appealing to many people. Plus many people who never owned a Wii U would like to try out games like Xenoblade Chronicles X.

I'll definitely get Super Smash Bros. if they make a port of that!! I'd love for a version of that game will all the content bundled into one package.

If they keep porting more Wii U games I will boycott Nintendo forever. This is screwing everyone who bought a Wii U.

If you're buying a system just for ports, then why even buy the Switch? Just wait 5 years and they'll "port" all the good Switch games to their next console.

Let me rephrase this...Nintendo should port every 1ST PARTY Wii U game to Switch at this point. From a business standpoint it only makes sense to gauge the sales of software on a previous console with an average of some sort and then dictate whether developing a certain piece of software is viable. Obviously Zelda and Mario Kart prove that people will be willing to buy ports. Hell, the Mario Kart 8 deluxe port sold more than a lot of AAA games do lifetime. Nintendo's IP needs to be available on platforms where the install base is bound to be greater than that of the previous console. Porting these games also gives them more time to create new and engaging experiences without people complaining about droughts and yeah, Arlo's video basically sums up how I feel on the issue. Not going to budge on it.

People like to have their games easily accessible and playeable. The idea of being able to play my favorite Wii U games anywhere I want is appealing.

Why do you think Virtual Console was such a big thing since the Wii started it? People don't just want to buy new games. They want to play their old games on a better platform. Nothing is wrong with that.

I mean look at Windwaker HD's  and Twilight Princess HD's sales. Or the 3DS Zelda remeakes. There is demand for this.

Xenoblade Chronicles X on the go would be my end...

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Well when 3rd parties say NO to Switch what choice do they have?

Next we will see a dvd drive addon for docked mode that will let you play your third party games from Wii U in upscaled 720p lol. This will get around them making games.

I don't really want any more ports, rather have new games and sequels D:
