Forums - Sales Discussion - Sony: 60.4 million sold through to consumer (ps4)

I think it's safe to say that the PS4 has passed the NES in shipment numbers a month ago at least.

PS4 shipped 60 million as of March 2017, thats 3 years in Japan with an extra quarter in the west.

PS2 shipped 12.7 in Japan in 3 years, 29.53 in America & 24.56 in PAL in 3 years and 1 quarter.

Launches aligned PS2 was about 7 million ahead of PS4 as of the last shipment update.

We dont live in a world of hypotheticals and *if this or that's* though.

Time aligned is just date to date.

PS4 is still tracking ahead of the PS2.

I love self-defeating comments like these, lol. I don't mean to be mean it's just that...it's so obvious lol.

You say we don't live in a world of hypotheticals and *if this or that's*....but you then proceed to indicate the PS4 is tracking ahead of the PS2 IF (LOL) you align the PS2 Japanese launch date with the PS4 World Wide launch. You say "Time aligned is just date to date" which just so happens to inflate the idea that PS4 is selling better than PS2. The problem is this ignores the fact that PS2 was only available in Japan for the first 8 months.

When you leave out the hypotheticals and *if this or that's* the PS2 (162 million) has sold more than PS4 (60million). WOW, the PS2 is super impressive, the PS4 can't even compete.

Horizon bundle would definitely have my interest.  Probably a GT Sport bundle, as well, depending on what reviews have to say.  I know the big multi-player/sports games would be popular in bundles but I don't play those.

Truth is, I'd probably already have a PS4 if it came with a game I wanted.

Japan has this little nice thing.

Yeah, see, that crinkles my fries.  I would have bought that.  That's the kind of bundle I want.

And the PS4 wasn't exactly available everywhere at launch, either, so what's your point?  Do you even know why we have staggered launches?  It's because console manufacturers can only make so many of them for launch demand.  Even if the PS2 had launched in a few other countries, Sony would have had to spread out those shipments meant for Japan, and the few they were saving up for the NA and EU launches.  So, yea, the PS2 would have sold a couple of extra million, but it would have just sold out quicker and Sony wouldn't have had enough to keep it in stock.  It's the same thing happening to the Switch right now.

PS4 wasn't available everywhere at launch? The PS4 was available in all major markets (48 countries btw) within less than a month of release. I'm wondering what your definition of available is.

What Zorg merely pointed out was when you align the PS2 against the PS4, region for region, as you will see, the data points towards PS2 outselling the PS4 (unless you think otherwise, lol) due to the fact the PS2's pace is greater than PS4's pace of generated sales.

If people want to say PS4 has sold more in 4 years than PS2 did after 4 years they aren't wrong because it is technically true. Then comes along Zorg who breaks down the sales region for region to find a better understanding and he's called misinformed, or just doesn't get it.

It's a funny phenomenon that goes on in the brain; Ignorance. Zorg I'm sure recognizes that PS4 has outsold the PS2 in the four years of skewed availability, but he also understands the break down of the sales regions and how those regional stats showcase the upcoming event of the PS2 eventually surpassing the PS4. Then comes the actual uninformed individuals who recognize PS4 has outsold the PS2 in the four years of skewed availability but can't recognize the regional breakdown. They say "NO NO NO PS4 actually outpaces blah blah blah." Again, it's a funny phenomenon that goes on in the brain; The ignorant ones always say the other is ignorant.

It launched later in Japan.  A little over 3 months. And there were smaller countries that came months later.

Of course, that isn't the main point.  The point is you are dealing in hypotheticals aligning each region.  A hypothetical that is also an impossibility.  The PS2 was staggered because there wouldn't be enough stock to launch in every country.  The parts weren't off the shelf and therefore not readily available.  That's the problem with going with all custom HW.

Sure, if Sony launched the PS2 in most countries at launch, they MAY have had an additional 2M sales in the first month, but they'd also be experiencing what Nintendo is right now, which equals fewer sales the months/year after.  It would have equalised itself out before this point in time.

You have to use logic, not come from a mindset of trying to downplay the PS4. Or listen to someone who has that mindset. The PS4 is still beating the PS2, period.  This is also a system that had the best Q4 for a PS console. Yes, including the PS2.

Damn it's up YoY, amazing.

Now the real question is will it reach 110 million? I think it's possible if they make a PS4 Super slim for 150$ and a game in 2020 just before the PS5 launch.

The PS4 wins versus the PS3 AND x360 together in the first years.
