Forums - Sales Discussion - Switch vs Ps4 - Who will win 2017 WW

I think it's gonna be closer than most are saying, but PS4 should win. I give them a 5 million difference at most.

From VGC (as of November 25th)

Switch - 9.2m

PS4 - 16.3m

Official data

Switch - over 10m sold through as of December 9th

PS4 - I can't find any numbers from 2017 alone, but it sold 20.6 million from December 6th 2016 till December 3rd 2017. I'd put it somewhere between 15m to 17m on 2017 alone.

So I understimated the PS4 or overstimated the Switch. Typical fanboy.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Funnily enough, stock didn't remain as an issue for the rest of this whole entire year. Not even in Japan so the excuse that Nintendo can't meet demand to beat the PS4 in total WW sales because of short supply gets thrown out the window ...

Let's assume the following:
- The PS4 sales are flat in 2017 compared to 2015 and 2016 at 17 million. They're currently running really close to those two years.
- The Switch sells every unit that Nintendo can produce in the 2017 calendar year.
- Nintendo hits their ramped up production target of 18 million units by March 31, 2017
- That of the 18 million units already sold, Nintendo will have sold 3.5 million by the end of April 2016, leaving 14.5 million units left to be produced.
- Those 14.5 million units will be produced evenly month over month, meaning 1.2 million units will be produced and sold each month. That's ~10 million over the months from May through December.
- 10 million + 13.5 million = 13.5 million units sold for the Switch in 2017

The PS4 outsells the Switch comfortably in 2017, driven by stronger PS4 sales over the October-December months.

Plus ignoring the Switch, there is also the Scorpio this holiday season. As you said, the PS4's competition the last holiday for example was a dead console (The Wii U) and a inferior identical console (One/S). Really anyone looking to purchase a new gaming system shoudl have looked at the PS4/Pro.

This upcoming season though, there is the new hot item, the Switch. Which is vastly different than the PS4/Pro and its offerings. Then there is the new Scorpio, which even if it is essentially identical to the PS4 in its offereings, it will be the top end model. No longer the inferior console when talking multiplats.

Both should steal a console or two from the PS4 this holiday season. So expecting same sales from PS4 this year as last year is being dillusional. One has to admit compared to last year, the PS4 has competition this year. It's like last year they were the Warriors palying the worst teams in the NBA. This year, they are playing the best teams in the NBA. Now I'm not saying the warriors can't still win, or won't, just that they won't be blow outs this year. The other teams will score more points and the warriors will score less points.

I might have actually been generous to the Switch with my 13.5 number.  We'll see in a few weeks.  I feel like both the 13.5 for Switch and the 17 for PS4 are still  in the ballpark.

But these responses to me from VideoGameAccountant and "irstupid" are classic.

irstupid's comment should remain a classic just for the phrase "inferior identical console".

Anyway, Europe is still around, so, yeah.

Shame on you people for predicting PS4. The best threads are the ones where everyone is wrong.

I just summed up the VGChartz PS4 sales for 2017, and until Nov it had sold 16,2 M units. Considering in the past years, Dec sales has been around 4+ M units, we can expect PS4 to make its all time high, more than 20 M units in 2017. Even 21 M is reachable, if Dec is as good as 2016.

Nintendo can win if they sell to the whole world like PS4 does. But Nintendo cannot beat PS4 if it sells in 60 countries and PS4 in 100. But PS4 will probably win this year because of their massive price advantage. Playstation for $200 is a great deal. Nintendo won’t be able to lower price until they sell at least 20 million units. So can nintendo win yes. But unlikely this year. Nintendo will sell at least 14 million units before March 31st 2018 and that’s huge for Nintendo.

Ps4 already won this year. And the ps4 is $300 same as the switch. $200 was only during the black friday week. Even if the switch is available in as many countries as the ps4, it still wouldnt beat the ps4. Sony dominates europe

Switch, it's hot, the PS4 has peaked and is winding down.

Number of days to sell through 10 million units-
PlayStation 4: 268 Days
Nintendo Switch: 275 Days

PlayStation 4 has now sold 70.6 million units worldwide as of December 3rd.
That means the console sold through 20.6 million units in the past 12 months.
More than in any prior 12 month period.

It also went from 60m to 70m in 172 days.
fewer days than any other 10m milestone.

PS2 was 71m shipped at this point in its life time,.... PS4 is 70,6m sold through (~75m shipped).... so its still ahead of the PS2 in its 4th year.

I can tell you now, it's obviously not close.

Have we numbers?

Switch did 10m in 9months.

PS4 did 17.2m so far this year (upto november)

Both will probably do ~2m or so in december atleast.

It *could* very well end up looking something like:

12-12,5m switch total vs 19,5-20m PS4 total this year.

So basically all those people that said the Switch would win 2017 ww sales, where wrong.

The PS4 is already over 17.2m for the year, back when we got the december 3rd numbers.

Its gonna do atleast another 2m in december.

But I agree with your 13m ish number for the Switch.

It didnt turn out nearly as close as most people thought it would, PS4 is clearly the sales leader this year.

*** PS: What happend to iNathan? we need him to make a "Switch vs Ps4 - Who will win 2012 WW" thread.

That would be more intresting.... will PS4 see a massive drop in its 5th year? will PS4 get a perm 199$?

How do God Of War, Red Dead Redemption, Spider-man, Detroit, TLOU2, FF7R effect 2018 for PS4?

What if Switch gets a new Pokemon? first pokemon that isnt running some crappy low 3ds resolution? will everyone get poke fever and buy switch in crazy numbers?
