Modernize them?

Forums - Gaming Discussion - Modernize them?

One particular criticism I hear from certain retro-style games is that their from a "dated" genre, like 3D collectathon platformers or on-rails spaceship shooters. Considering how most of the only games to get rave reviews now are open-world, calling a genre "dated" seems like a huge copout.

Now I know most of the people who said that probably can never be swayed the other direction, but how can certain oldschool game genres be modernized? Are there ways to modernize certain genres WITHOUT making them open world and calling it a day?

Yeah, like Omega Boost, Panzer dragoon. I wonder if there is still place for such games

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

I wish there were, but most big name gaming journalists keep saying "Eww, it not teh openn wurld, hurr durr, one starr!!". It's why I don't trust many reviewers these days.

2D platformng has been modernized at least, right? Didn't Shovel Knight and Shantae kinda help modernize sidescrolling platformers?

I don't know if there's any need to actually modernise the genres, as long as the games are good. The graphics of many retro games should be updated, though.

Anyway, these young gaming journalists telling us the genres should be modernised, is like them telling their dads how to fuck.

Gaming "journalists" are ridiculous sometimes. I do not like them and neither trust them.

But where would Shovel Knight be without it's stylized 8-bit look?

I have an idea. Let's make a retro game and remove all the retro from it.

What do you mean by that?

The idea behind retro games is such that they look and play like retro games.  Removing the retro gamplay just makes it a pixelated modern game.

The least retro retro game ever!
