Forums - Gaming Discussion - Dynasty Warriors 9 news coming in May

I'm hoping to hear an explanation how they're planning to NOT ruin it even further with their silly open world idea. At first glance, it seems like it can't make a game like Dynasty Warriors better, only worse. Imagine having to do meaningless and uninteresting side quests between actual battles, as well as having to run (well, ride, I suppose) between battles. Kind of sounds like DW7 and DW8 with the annoying non-story battles made practically mandatory, plus some other annoyance.

Of course there is a chance they're actually smart about this and can innovate and really take advantage of the open world to make the game better, but considering what they've been doing with the series lately, I'll be really surprised if this doesn't make the series even worse. What really annoys me is that the people developing the series seem to be some of the most incompetent developers in the world. There's so much potential in the concept of the series, yet they somehow end up missing almost all of it.

The impression that I got from it is that it's more about making the battles bigger and giving you more ways to approach them, rather than the linear maps they had before (seriously, later entries got so much worse for linearity!), rather than throwing in silly side quests here and there.

Kind of sceptical myself too, but I expect it to be a campaign only thing with cutouts from that being used for free mode or whatever, so at least that shouldn't change

Besides, the real benefit of open world will come when we get to the inevitable DW9 Empires

I really hope you're right, but considering the team's recent track record, I'm still worried. And I definitely agree with you about Empires! While the main games in the series have been getting worse and worse (well, it's not all downhill, but I think the series is worse off than it was during the 6th generation), the Empires games have been getting better and better (with the exception of DW6: Empires, which did have some nice improvements, unfortunately along with some bad design decisions). Open world could really add a lot to the Empires series if done properly.

Finally.

Even as a Dynasty Warriors fan, this is too much. I'm barely on 8XL Complete.

Curious about the engine it is running on and effects could me for so many other "Warrior" type titles in coming years.

A teaser of a teaser. Starting to hate this trend by Japanese devs.
